George Tays was an independent researcher hired by William Webb Clary to research land grants in Mexican California. Clary (1888-1971) was a partner in the law firm of O'Melveney and Myers and served on various boards at the Claremont Colleges. He published several works on California history, including The laws of the town of San Francisco, 1847 (1947), History of the law firm of O'Melveny & Myers, 1885-1965 (1966), The Claremont Colleges: a history of the development of the Claremont group plan (1970), and Fifty years of book collecting (1970).
