Title: Bartlett Bent papers, 1831-1882.

A collection of papers, primarily correspondence sent to Bartlett Bent of Middletown, Connecticut. Includes letters written by Connecticut native Isaac Toucey and a list of vote getters in Glastonbury between 1842 and 1848. The correspondence to Bent dates between 1863 and 1882. During this time Bent served as Mayor of Middletown (1866-1867), chairman of the Republican State Committee (1869-1873), and Postmaster of Middletown (1869-1885). Topics include various Connecticut political matters, national political appointments, scandals in the Grant administration, Bent's speculations in western railroads, and correspondence with the New Haven and Willimantic railroad company. Letters are from Senator Orville Platt of Meriden, Marshall Jewell, Governors Buckingham and Hawley, and various congressmen. Bent was originally a Democrat but switched to the Republican party during the Civil War. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872, nominating Ulysses S. Grant for a second term. Additionally, letters written to Mrs. Jewell from Mary Livermore and Susan B. Anthony are included.

Many of the photographs were used as part of a commemorative book, "200th Anniversary of the Office of the Attorney General", which highlights the history of the Office of Attorney General and the celebration of the anniversary on September 22, 1989. A copy of this book is included in this series in addition to another Department of Justice book,"Attorneys General of the United States, 1798-1985", which used many of the photographs. Not every Attorney General from the time period of the series is represented. A few images contain multiple Attorney Generals.

It is unclear what Barnes's connection was to Nikola Tesla: letters from him indicate that he had visited Barnes in New York in 1904.

The album was given by John Richards of Hanover, N.H., to his daughter on her birthday and contains sentiments from Richards and John Richards, Jr. The remainder of the album contains cut signatures of prominent 19th century figures including Simeon E. Baldwin, Henry Ward Beecher, Grover Cleveland, Cyrus W. Field, Hamilton Fish, Joseph R. Hawley, John A. Logan, Levi P. Morton, Matthew Calbraith Perry, Redfield Proctor, Isaac Toucey, and Gideon Welles. The album also contains one engraving of Zachary Taylor as Mexican War hero. At a later time the album was in the possession of a Belden Booth.

The letterbook that Dornin kept while in command of the San Jacinto, from May 14, 1860 and August 8, 1861. The correspondents include Isaac Toucey, Secretary of the Navy, officers of Africa Squadron, the sailors and officers under his command, and the United States consul in Monrovia. Included are reports of captured slavers.
