A collection of papers, primarily correspondence sent to Bartlett Bent of Middletown, Connecticut. Includes letters written by Connecticut native Isaac Toucey and a list of vote getters in Glastonbury between 1842 and 1848. The correspondence to Bent dates between 1863 and 1882. During this time Bent served as Mayor of Middletown (1866-1867), chairman of the Republican State Committee (1869-1873), and Postmaster of Middletown (1869-1885). Topics include various Connecticut political matters, national political appointments, scandals in the Grant administration, Bent's speculations in western railroads, and correspondence with the New Haven and Willimantic railroad company. Letters are from Senator Orville Platt of Meriden, Marshall Jewell, Governors Buckingham and Hawley, and various congressmen. Bent was originally a Democrat but switched to the Republican party during the Civil War. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872, nominating Ulysses S. Grant for a second term. Additionally, letters written to Mrs. Jewell from Mary Livermore and Susan B. Anthony are included.
