Includes Edward Meyer Kern's letters of application and appointment as artist and photographer for the expedition (including letters to Cadwaladar Ringgold about the cost of Kern's equipment), letters of preparation for the Ringgold-Rogers Expedition, a series of letters from John Mercer Brooke to Navy Secretary Isaac Toucey describing the U.S.S. Fenimore Cooper's expedition from 1858-1860 (including descriptions of their travels, their interactions with French and Japanese sailors, and the eventual wreck of the Fenimore Cooper), letters between Brooke and Mariana Islands Governor Don Felipe de la Corte regarding sailors from the shipwrecked U.S.S. Lexington and a separate account of the shipwreck, and a letter from A.D. Piper to Brooke about John H. Parker and the Pacific Guano Company. Also includes a letter from Russian Navy Commander A.A. Popoff to Brooke regarding the condition of the Fenimore Cooper.
