U.S. Navy Commodore Armstrong's early naval career papers include a prisoner-of-war pass during the War of 1812 and papers re his naval appointments. Papers re China and the Second Opium War include correspondence of vessels and officers under Armstrong's command, material re the hostilities between Great Britain and China near Canton, and the capture of the Barrier Forts at Canton. Consular documents include materials from U.S. Consuls Oliver H. Perry, Henry P. Blanchard, Caleb Jones, and U.S. Commissioner Peter Parker. The Andrew H. Foote correspondence is to various American and foreign consuls in China relative to the difficulties of the period. Material re the murder of U.S. sailor Thomas Fitzgerald includes letters from U.S. Vice Consul William Knapp. The fleet surgeon controversy relates to Armstrong's use of surgeon Maxwell Wood. The Pensacola Navy-Yard and court-martial material includes communications between Armstrong and Secretary of War Isaac Toucey re Armstrong's command of the navy yard, its surrender to the Florida state militia in 1861, and Armstrong's court-martial resulting from that surrender. Correspondence and personal papers include letters to Armstrong's wife, Hannah Crowninshield; letters from his brother William; papers re the Phoenix Bank, Charlestown, Mass.; deeds; and bills and receipts re Harmony Grove and Broad Street Cemeteries, Salem, Mass. William Crowninshield's court-martial consists of court testimony. Afro-American sailor William Niphon's prize claim relates to his share of an 1863 prize.
