Josiah Royce was born in Grass Valley, California, on November 20, 1855. He received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1885 and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1878. Royce taught English and philosophy at both Berkeley and Harvard, and was also active in the study of the American West. He spent a significant amount of time from 1883 to 1891 writing both histories and novels relating to California history. Royce Hall at UCLA and the Grass Valley Library-Royce Branch were both named in Royce's honor. He died on September 14, 1916.
Royce received an honorary degree from Harvard in 1911 and taught philosophy at Harvard.
Josiah Royce was an American philosopher, educator, and author. From humble beginnings in California, he became the leading proponent of American idealism and one of the most influential thinkers of his generation. He published numerous works, including volumes expressing his own thoughts, and analyses of other philosophies. He had a long association with Harvard and William James; the two great minds had a notable influence on each other.
Josiah Royce (1855-1916) was an American idealist philosopher and a professor of history of philosophy at Harvard from 1892 to 1914. Royce was a friend of the Hocking and the Mason families. Daniel Gregory Mason (1873-1953) was a professor of music at Columbia University and his brother, Edward Palmer Mason, was a president and owner of the Mason-Hamlin Music Company of Boston. Both were the sons of Henry Mason (1831-1890) a founder of Mason-Hamlin Piano Company. Mary Mason was the wife of Edward Palmer Mason, then later married Daniel Gregory Mason. William Ernest Hocking was a professor of philosophy at Harvard and his son was Richard Hocking.
Philosopher, educator, and author.
Josiah Royce, American philosopher and writer, was the leading American proponent of Idealism. Born in California to English immigrants, Royce studied in California, Germany, and at Johns Hopkins. William James helped bring Royce to Harvard, and the two profound thinkers significantly influenced each other during America's "Golden Age of Philosophy."
American philosopher.
Educator and philosopher who received his Ph. D. at Johns Hopkins in 1878. Proponent of post-Kantian idealism which emphasized some kind of metaphysical Absolute and reality as an act or experience of the mind.
Josiah Royce (1855-1916) was a member of the “golden age” of American philosophy and a foremost interpreter of absolute idealism early in his career. His philosophical thought later evolved into an examination and embrace of pragmatism, loyalty, and community. He investigated the mathematical and logical aspects of philosophy, providing a rigorous basis for his metaphysical inquiry.
Royce taught philosophy at Harvard from 1882 until 1916, beginning as an instructor and advancing to Professor of the History of Philosophy in 1892, Chair of the Department of Philosophy from 1894 to 1898, and Alford Professor of Natural Religion and Civil Polity in 1914. At Harvard, his colleagues in philosophy included William James , George Herbert Palmer , Charles Sanders Peirce , and Hugo Munsterberg .
Born in California, Royce graduated from the University of California in 1875. After study in Germany and at Johns Hopkins, he returned to Berkeley to teach from 1878 to 1882. From 1882 until his death, he taught at Harvard. Royce received an honorary degree from Harvard in 1911.
His major works include The Spirit of Modern Philosophy (1892) , The Conception of God (1895) , The World and the Individual (1899-1901) , The Sources of Religious Insight (1912) , The Philosophy of Loyalty (1908) , and The Problem of Christianity (1913) .

Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948, 1857-1902
Title:
Thomas Davidson papers 1857-1948 1857-1902
Correspondence, lectures, articles, printed matter, clippings, and film relating to the career of Davidson who came to the U.S. in 1867 and was associated with the St. Louis and Concord schools of philosophy, the founding of the Fellowship of the New Life, and the establishment of the Breadwinners' College. From 1878 to 1884, he was in Italy studying the writings of Antonio Rosmini-Serbati, about whom he published a study in 1882. The major portion of the papers is made up of correspondence, including letters from Henry Adams, John Dewey, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William James, Henry Cabot Lodge, John Stuart Mill, and Stephen Samuel Wise. Only a few pages of his diary of 1858 survive. Also with the papers is material from Edward Endelman, a student of Davidson's. Of particular interest is Endelman's correspondence about Davidson with William T. Harris, a Hegelian philosopher who had been a close friend of Davidson's. In addition, two reels of microfilm collected by John Roemischer which contain letters and articles by Davidson in other repositories have been added to the papers.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Royce, Josiah, 1855-1916. Materials relating to General John C. Frémont and the conquest of California, 1885.
Title:
Materials relating to General John C. Frémont and the conquest of California, 1885.
Negative photocopies of two letters and one book chapter relating to Josiah Royce's work on General John C. Frémont and the conquest of California. The first letter, written from Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 14, 1885, is addressed to Frémont's wife, Jessie B. Fremont. In the letter, Royce presents himself as an "historical student" who is conducting an "investigation of the problems of the Conquest of California." He writes extensively of a confidential government mission given to American merchant Thomas O. Larkin in 1845, and which was supposed to persuade residents of California to turn against England and Mexico and attach themselves to the United States, either peacefully or by force. Royce quotes an interview he had with Frémont in which the General denied knowledge of Larkin being made a secret agent. Royce urges Mrs. Frémont to make any knowledge General Fremont had about Larkin known publicly, because he felt that "my book would do harm and not good to General Frémont's renown." The letter is labeled "copy of my letter of inquiry to Mrs. Frémont." A second letter, dated August 20, 1885 and also written from Cambridge to Mrs. Frémont, also focuses on the "Larkin dispatch" and Royce's belief that General Frémont already knew of its existence. Royce writes of testimony from Archibald H. Gillespie before a Claims Committee in 1848 in which Gillespie claimed he had told Frémont about the dispatch, and also mentions a letter from Fremont to Senator Thomas Hart Benton (Mrs. Frémont's father) in May 1846 to the same effect. Royce also writes of a paper called "The Secret History of the Acquisition of California" which he planned to give at an American Historical Society conference at Saratoga. The final item is a chapter from an unnamed book, written by Royce and apparently sent to Mrs. Frémont. Royce again remarks on Larkin, the intentions of the United States government regarding California, and of letters supposedly written by Senator Benton, Mrs. Frémont, and General Frémont to the effect that any means necessary would be employed to prevent England from taking California, even if it meant war with Mexico. Includes handwritten corrections by Mrs. Frémont.

Hine, Robert V., 1921-. Papers of Robert Hine, 1841-2004 (bulk 1960-1990)
Title:
Papers of Robert Hine, 1841-2004 (bulk 1960-1990)
This collection is organized to preserve, whenever possible, Robert Hine's original order. This includes most of his original folder titles, the original order of folders, and the original order of some of the boxes. The collection contains Hine's professional work as a historian of the American West and a writer, and includes research notes, photocopied manuscripts, newspaper clippings, interviews, correspondence, and other research related papers. As such, the original order of Hine's papers reflects his process of collecting and referencing them as he worked on various book projects. In some instances, his original folders provide insight into the kinds of questions or themes he was pursuing in the course of his work. Hine also revised the organization of these papers as he prepared them for donation to the Huntington Library in the late 1990s. Despite Hine's own curatorship, some of his papers remained unsorted and unorganized at the time of this collection's cataloging. Those have been organized by the cataloger to reflect, as much as possible, Hine's own organizational methods. To this end, the boxes of the collection are organized largely according to the book or other scholarly project for which Hine obtained them, with the exception of the boxes that house correspondence. Boxes 1-22 pertain to Hine's work on California's colonies and communes, and in particular the books California's Utopian colonies (1973) and Community on the American frontier: separate but not alone (1985). Within this series, boxes 1-12 are an alphabetical subseries of the communes by name; boxes 13 and 14 are a subseries dedicated specifically to the Llano Commune; boxes 15-18 are a miscellaneous subseries organized largely by subject (i.e. Family in colonies and communes); boxes 19-22 are miscellaneous notes, citations, and bibliographic index cards. Boxes 23-26 pertain to Hine's research into John Russell Bartlett and the book Bartlett's West: drawing the Mexican boundary (1969); boxes 27-30 relate to his work on Josiah Royce and the book Josiah Royce: from Grass Valley to Harvard; boxes 31-33 relate to his work on Edward Kern and the book In the shadow of Fremont: Edward Kern and the art of American exploration (1982); boxes 34-35 pertain to his research into Theodore Talbot and the book Soldiers in the West: letters of Theodore Talbot during his services in California, Mexico, and Oregon, 1845-53 (1972); box 36 relates to his memoir Second sight (1993); boxes 37-39 contain miscellaneous research material, including chapter notes for California's Utopian colonies, scholarly reviews of his books, and miscellaneous secondary scholarship; boxes 40-43 contain correspondence, largely with other historians but also notably with (then California governor) Ronald Reagan; boxes 44-47 contain bibliographic index cards; box 48 contains audio-visual material; box 49 contains ephemera; and lastly box 50 is oversize material. The collection also contains duplications (photocopies, prints) of artwork done by John Russell Bartlett and Edward Kern, made while Hine was researching their artistic work in the West. Almost all of the materials dated before the 1950s are reproductions made at Hine's request for reference in his research and writing, and many of them concern the 19th century figures Edward Kern, John Russell Bartlett, Josiah Royce and Theodore Talbot

Title:
Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948 (inclusive), 1857-1902 (bulk).
