Josiah Royce was born in Grass Valley, California, on November 20, 1855. He received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1885 and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1878. Royce taught English and philosophy at both Berkeley and Harvard, and was also active in the study of the American West. Protestant theologian, author, teacher, leader in the modern Ecumenical Movement; educated at Harvard University, Union Theological Seminary, and the Universities of Paris and Strasbourg.
