Student notes in philosophy courses taught by Josiah Royce and William James, 1898-1899.

Three notebooks contain manuscript notes taken by Whitmore in Philosophy 3, The Philosophy of Nature, given in 1898-1899 by Professor Josiah Royce, with additional lectures by Professor George Herbert Palmer. Two notebooks contain Whitmore's manuscript notes in Philosophy 9, Metaphysics, given in 1898-1899 by Professor William James. Examination papers are pasted into the front of four of the volumes.

Josiah Royce was born in Grass Valley, California, on November 20, 1855. He received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1885 and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1878. Royce taught English and philosophy at both Berkeley and Harvard, and was also active in the study of the American West.
