Benjamin Franklin Bache was a journalist and printer and grandson of Benjamin Franklin.
American journalist, grandson of Benjamin Franklin, son of Richard Bache, 1737-1811, cousin of Alexander Dallas Bache, 1806-1867.
Grandson of Benjamin Franklin.
Benjamin Franklin Bache, the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, worked as a printer and journalist.
Benjamin Franklin Bache, grandson of Benjamin Franklin, was a journalist and printer. Entries for 1784 were printed by Bernard Faÿ, "Paris, à la fin de l'ancien régime, vu par un petit garcon de Philadelphie," Franco-American Review 1(1936-37):317.
A leading Jeffersonian journalist and editor of the Aurora, one of the most important newspapers in early national Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin Bache was born in 1769, the eldest son of Richard and Sarah (Franklin) Bache, and grandson of Benjamin Franklin. In the fall of 1776, the eight year old Bache accompanied his grandfather and cousin William Temple Franklin to Paris. Provided with a excellent education there and in Geneva, he was also introduced to the printing trade through the Parisian printing house of Didot.
Returning to Philadelphia in 1785, Bache finished his education at the University of Pennsylvania and in 1790, he founded the Aurora, which quickly earned a reputation as a leading Republican organ, and just as quickly earned the wrath of Federalists for his unrelenting attacks on the Washington and Adams administrations.
Bache married Margaret Hartman Markoe in 1791, the eldest daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Markoe, wealthy planters from the Caribbean island of St. Croix. The couple had four children before Bache died in September 1798, a victim of the yellow fever epidemic. Margaret Bache continued to operate the Aurora for several months before handing operation of the newspaper to William Duane, an Irish-immigrant and Republican radical whom she eventually married.
Franklin Bache, a physician, teacher, and chemist, was the eldest son of Benjamin Franklin Bache and Margaret Hartman Bache. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania, he received his MD in 1814 after serving as a military surgeon during the War of 1812. Bache published numerous works on chemistry and taught at the Franklin Institute (1826-1832), the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (1831-1841), and at Jefferson Medical College (1841-1864). He received honors internationally for his work, and served as secretary, vice-president, and president of the American Philosophical Society. He married Aglae Dabadie in 1818, with whom he had eight children.

Franklin-Bache Papers, 1707-1799
Title:
Franklin-Bache Papers 1707-1799
Containing over 4 linear feet of letters and documents, the Franklin-Bache Papers comprises the second largest collection of letters and documents relating to Benjamin Franklin in the APS Library. Although the scope of the collection is broad, including materials from the time of Franklin's arrival in Philadelphia to his death, the heart of the collection documents the period of Franklin's ministry in France (1776-1785) and his diplomatic efforts to win financial and military support for the revolutionary cause, as well as less intensive coverage of his ministry in England before the Revolution. Franklin's correspondence with American and French officials, financiers (personal and otherwise), and savants provides tantalizing details on the social context of Franklin's ministry in France, his intellectual life, and his growing celebrity. Much of the correspondence documents the efforts to convince French officials early in the war to support the American cause, but there is valuable material relating to the peace negotiations as well. The collection is equally rich in personal correspondence, including a rich set of letters from Mary Stevenson Hewson, Georgiana Shipley, Catherine Ray Greene, Jane Mecom, Deborah Franklin, and a number of Franklin's other relatives. The collection is arranged chronologically.

Miscellaneous Benjamin Franklin Collections, 1710-1822
Title:
Miscellaneous Benjamin Franklin Collections 1710-1822
Since publication of I. Minis Hays's Calendar of the Papers of Benjamin Franklin in 1908, the APS Library has acquired a large number of miscellaneous letters and other documents relating to the life, mind, and work of Franklin and his immediate family. The collections listed in this finding aid consist of letters and documents to and from Franklin organized into groupings based upon provenance or focal point. The largest grouping consists of miscellaneous materials acquired individually or in small groups over the years, including a number of important individual items. The other collections consist largely of correspondence between Franklin and individual friends and colleagues, including his friends Mme Brillon, Mary "Polly" Stevenson Hewson, and Catherine Ray Greene, the Whig agriculturist Richard Jackson, and the printer Francis Childs. The collections include photostats of selected materials held by other institutions or that were in private hands. These are available for reference only.

Elisha Kent Kane Papers, Bulk, 1843-1857, 1810-1953
Title:
Elisha Kent Kane Papers Bulk, 1843-1857 1810-1953
The most stellar member of a stellar family, Elisha Kent Kane was among the most popular American explorers of the mid-nineteenth century, a hero in the tragic mode. Born in Philadelphia in 1820, the son of John Kintzing Kane and Jane Duval Leiper, Kane studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania before earning a commission as a naval surgeon. While in the Navy, Kane embarked on the succession of voyages to exotic locales that became the basis for his extraordinary fame. In 1843, he attended Caleb Cushing's first diplomatic mission to China as ship's physician, and subsequently traveled to the Philippines and Western Africa. Distinguishing himself in the Mexican War, Kane's greatest fame came from two expeditions to the arctic, aiming to locate the lost explorer, Sir John Franklin and to explore for evidence of the open polar sea. Kane died in 1857 while attempting to organize a third arctic voyage. Part of the Kane Family Collection, the Papers of Elisha Kent Kane contain a mix of personal and family correspondence with correspondence relating to all of Kane's explorations. Intelligent, articulate and very much a romantic, Kane's letters are expressive and passionate. The collection provides fine documentation of youth, his relationship with the Spiritualist Margaret Fox, and of course his travels to China and off the coast of Africa in 1846. Kane's two expeditions to the arctic are particularly well documented, with correspondence, notes, logbooks, diaries, and sketches, as well as Kane's post-expedition notes, writings, and lectures recounting his experiences.

William Temple Franklin Papers, 1775-1819
Title:
William Temple Franklin Papers 1775-1819
The son of William Franklin, Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Temple Franklin worked as aide to his grandfather, Benjamin Franklin, when the latter served as minister to France during the American Revolution. A bonvivant, Temple received his highest public appointment as Secretary to the American delegation at the Treaty of Versailles in 1782-1783, largely through the influence of his famous grandfather, but never again attained a significant post. As Franklin's literary heir, he edited and published a three volume set of his grandfather's writings in 1817. He married his long time mistress a few months before his death in Paris in 1823. The William Temple Franklin Papers provides a richly detailed portrait of the life of the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, and consists largely of letters received during the years that Temple served as his grandfather's aide in France, 1776-1785. Although much of the correspondence is routine, during this period, Temple received regular reports from friends and diplomatic colleagues relaying information on the American Revolution, the course of diplomatic and peace negotiations, and French public opinion on Benjamin Franklin and the new United States. The collection is also a rich resource for information on the personal lives of the Franklins, including interesting correspondence from Temple's relatives William Franklin, Elizabeth Franklin, Sarah Franklin Bache, and Jonathan Williams, and his mistress Blanchette Caillot.

Pickering, Timothy, 1745-1829. Timothy Pickering autograph letter signed to Rufus King, 1798 Sept. 15.
Title:
Timothy Pickering autograph letter signed to Rufus King, 1798 Sept. 15.
Manuscript letter from Timothy Pickering in Trenton, New Jersey to Rufus King in London. The letter discusses some of the aftermath of the XYZ Affair, which was a diplomatic incident in France in which three French agents made what the American delegation felt were unreasonable demands as a condition for continued diplomatic relations. The American delegation consisted of Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry. Pickering's letter describes his poor opinion of Gerry's conduct (he remained in France after Pinckney and Marshall were deported) and relays Pinckney's equally poor opinion of Gerry. Part of the letter is written in code, though it has been deciphered between the lines. Pickering also describes the yellow fever outbreak in America, and reports the deaths of newspaper publishers John Fenno, Thomas Greenleaf, and Benjamin Franklin Bache.

Title:
Bache Papers-Castle Collection, 1766-1946.
The collection contains personal papers, correspondence, notes, financial papers, genealogical research, and printed materials of the Bache family, desendants of Benjamin Franklin. The papers of Franklin's grandson, Benjamin Franklin Bache, are at the core of the collection, covering almost the entire span of his life. Personal papers include schoolboy essays and notes, and correspondence with his grandfather, father and mother, and with his future wife Margaret Hartman Markoe. The collection also includes a journal Bache kept while in Geneva and Paris (1 August 1782-14 September 1785), in which he described the people and events he saw, including Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and John Jay. There are also many papers in this collection relating to the estate of Francis Markoe in St. Croix (V.I.), to which Margaret and her children were heirs. Bache's professional papers include letters from Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Robert Morris and James Monroe. His son Franklin Bache is also well represented, and his personal papers and correspondence are joined with records of his professional accomplishments and honors. There are smaller amounts of material for succeeding generations, including Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), Thomas Hewson Bache (1826-1890), Charles Meigs Bache (1829-1890), Albert Dabadie Bache (1832-1895), and Franklin Bache (1869-1946). The collection also includes approximately 70 imprints and bound volumes.

Title:
William Temple Franklin-George Fox Collection 1791-1800
After William Temple Franklin returned to Europe in 1792, he left oversight of his financial interests in America in the hands of his intimate friend and fellow land speculator, George Fox. A physician and member of the American Philosophical Society, Fox also took possession of the remainder of Benjamin Franklin's papers, which eventually passed through his son, Charles Pemberton Fox, to the APS. The Franklin-Fox Collection contains 98 items, consisting mostly of letters from William Temple Franklin to George Fox regarding land holdings and finances, and retained copies of Fox's letters to Franklin. The correspondence is fairly relentlessly focused on business matters and rarely contains personal comments, however there are occasional requests for books and two reference to the yellow fever epidemic of 1798 and the death of Benjamin Franklin Bache.
