Henry Jackson (1839-1921) was born in Sheffield on 12 March 1839, and educated at Sheffield Collegiate School and Cheltenham College. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1858 (B.A., 1862), and was thereafter a fellow (1864), assistant tutor (1866), and vice-master (1914). He was appointed Praelector in Ancient Philosophy at the university in 1875, and Regius Professor of Greek in 1906. Jackson was awarded the Order of Merit in 1908. He died at Bournemouth on 25 September 1921.
