Chancellor of Edinburgh University, 1859-1868.
Sir David Brewster was a Scottish natural philosopher and principal of Edinburgh University.
Physicist.
Brewster was a Scottish physicist and natural philosopher.
Scottish physicist (optics) and Fellow of the Royal Society.
Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was an important scientific reformer during the early nineteenth century. From his position as superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, and through leadership roles in the scientific institutions of the time, Bache helped bring American science into alignment with the professional nature of its European counterpart. In addition, Bache fostered the reform of public education in America.
On July 19, 1806 Alexander Dallas Bache was born into one of Philadelphia's elite families. The son of Richard Bache and Sophia Dallas, he was Benjamin Franklin's great-grandson, nephew to George Dallas (vice president under James K. Polk), and grandson to Alexander James Dallas (secretary of the treasury under James Madison). In 1821, Bache was admitted to the United States Military Academy at the age of 15, graduating first in his class four years later. He remained at the Academy for an additional two years to teach mathematics and natural history. While serving as a lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, working on the construction of Fort Adams in Newport, R.I., he met Nancy Clarke Fowler whom he would later marry.
Bache left the Army in 1828 to begin an academic career, accepting an appointment as professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. Although his scientific interests were broad, he had a particular interest in geophyscial research. While in Philadelphia, he constructed a magnetic observatory, and made extensive research into terrestrial magnetism, and during the 1830s he began to be recognized as a leading figure in the city's scientific community. Bache was an active member of the American Philosphical Society and the Franklin Institute, seeking to raise the professional standards of both institutions and urging them to place a stronger emphasis on original research. While at the Franklin Institute from 1830-1835, Bache led a Federally-funded investigation into steam-boiler explosions, the government's first use of technical experts to examine a matter involving public policy.
In 1836 Bache became interested in educational reform when he was asked to help organize the curriculum at Girard College, of which he later served as president. Bache spent two years in Europe visiting over 250 educational institutions. The result of his visit was a 600 page study, Report on Education in Europe, to the Trustees of the Girard College for Orphans published in 1839. Although Bache was unable to apply the report at Girard College because of its delayed opening, it proved useful in overhauling the curriculum of Philadelphia's Central High School, where he was superintendent from 1839-1842, and was widely influential among American educational reformers, helping to introduce the Prussian educational model to the United States.
After meeting many of the leading savants during a European tour, including Alexander von Humboldt, Francois Arago, and Karl Friedrich Gauss, Bache became convinced of the need to professionalize American science. His opportunity to make an impact came in 1843 with the death of Ferdinand Hassler, superindendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. In the years before the Civil War, the Coast Survey supported more scientists then any other institution in the country, and Bache and his colleagues saw the Survey as a means of gaining federal patronage for science. After a campaign by his friends and colleagues, Bache was named as Hassler's replacement. Over the next two decades Bache transformed the Coast Survey into one of the nation's leading scientific institutions, becoming an important patron of science himself in the process . Bache was not just an administrator, but remained personally involved in field work.
Bache also led the reform of American science through his leadership of an elite group known as the "Lazzaroni" or scientific beggars. The goal of the Lazzaroni was to ensure that the nation's leading scientists kept control of the nation's scientific institutions, and they were instrumental in reforming the American Association for the Advancement of Science (of which Bache was president of in 1850). In his remarkably busy schedule, Bache was a member of the Lighthouse Board (1844-1845), superintendent of the Office of Weights and Measures (1844), and a prominent regent for the Smithsonian Institution, where he convinced fellow Lazzaroni Joseph Henry to become its first secretary. Bache also played a leading role in the creation of the National Academy of Sciences, serving as its first president. When the Americn Civil War broke out, Bache focused the Coast Survey to support the war effort, was vice president of the Sanitary Commision, a consultant to the army and navy on battle plans, a superintended for Philadelphia's defence plans, and a member of the Permanent Commission of the navy in charge of evaluating new weapons. Bache died in Newport, R.I. on February 17, 1867.

Bache, A. D. (Alexander Dallas), 1806-1867. A. D. Bache Collection, 1833-1873
Title:
A. D. Bache Collection 1833-1873
Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was an important scientific reformer during the early nineteenth century. From his position as superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, and through leadership roles in the scientific institutions of the time, Bache helped bring American science into alignment with the professional nature of its European counterparts. In addition, Bache fostered the reform of public education in America. The Alexander Dallas Bache Collection consists of 91 letters written primarily by Bache. In most cases, these are brief notes replying to letters that are not part of the collection. The majority of items relate to Bache's work as superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey, including letters of recommendation and introduction, and there is minor correspondence regarding the National Academy of Sciences, scientific matters, his travels in Europe, or personal matters. Of particular interest is the letter from Louis Agassiz in 1856 expressing his view of what the natural history museum of the future should be.

Herschel Family. Papers, 1721-1951, (bulk 1810-1871).
Title:
Papers, 1721-1951, (bulk 1810-1871).
The bulk of the Herschel papers consists of Sir John F.W. Herschel's correspondence, essays, drawings, notes, calculations, reports, notebooks, charts, documents, memoranda books, diaries, and travel journals from 1809 to 1871. Also present are Caroline Lucretia Herschel's correspondence, biographical memoranda, documents, tables, and diaries from 1787 to 1846; Sir William Herschel's correspondence, essays, notes, and tables from 1758 to 1822; correspondence and essays by other members of the Herschel family, colleagues, and acquaintances; and reports, minutes, and documents of various organizations to which John F.W. Herschel belonged. Among manuscripts of Sir John Herschel's works are his writings on actinometry, astronomy, the barometer, biology, chemistry, geology, music, photography, physical optics, physics, and other subjects, as well as 37 poems he wrote between 1826 and 1842. A manuscript of one of Herschel's earliest works, Memoir on a Remarkable Application of Cote's Theorems, is present in the collection, as are notebooks from his student years. Notes from numerous chemistry experiments date from 1848 to 1870. Diaries cover the years 1820-71, while travel journals from 1809 to 1850 contain observations on tours in Italy, France, Germany, and England. Herschel's reports, notes, star charts, financial accounts, and diaries from his work at an observation point at the Cape of Good Hope are present. Reports, essays, and documents of various organizations with which Sir John was associated, including the Royal Mint (1850-55), the English Committee for the Terrestrial Magnetism Survey (1838-39), the Greenwich Observatory (1830), the Royal University Commission (1850), the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Royal Commission on Standards of Weights and Measurements (1838-43), are also included. Items in the miscellaneous works series include Sir John Herschel's sketches titled "Profiles Taken with the Camera Lucida," sketches of apparatus, and various writings and calculations. Sir John's list of his publications chronologically records all of his published books, articles, and letters from 1812 to 1870. The letters series comprises correspondence from Sir John Herschel to over 200 correspondents, including George Biddell Airy, Mary Baldwin, W.E. Gladstone, Margaret Brodie Stewart Herschel, Richard Jones, Henry Rich, Edward Sabine, William Henry Fox Talbot, and Charles E. Trevelyan. The miscellaneous series is comprised of correspondence to Sir John Herschel, correspondence and works of other members of the Herschel family, and correspondence and works of colleagues and acquaintances. Also included are Sir John's account books, memoranda books, and Lady Herschel's housekeeping books from 1822 to 1840. Correspondence to Sir John Herschel includes nearly 1200 letters from such correspondents as George Biddell Airy, Jasper Atkinson, Charles Babbage, William Thomas Brande, Henry Drury Harness, George Peacock, Richard Sheepshanks, and William Whewell. Within Sir William Herschel's correspondence are letters from his father and other relatives in Germany. Sir William's "Concerning the Central Powers of the Particles of Matter," "My Idea of Matter," "Remarks on Dr. Priestly's Disquisition on Matter and Spirit," "Interference of Light," notes on astronomy, notes on optics, and various mathematical tables are represented in the collection. A list of the telescopes Sir William constructed and documents relating to his early musical career are also present. Sir William's biographical memoranda from 1758 to 1787, recopied by Caroline Herschel, and the original draft of Sir John's obituary of his father, are included as well. Among Caroline Herschel's correspondence are letters from Carl Gauss, John Haygarth, Alexander von Humboldt, and Joseph Lalande. Caroline Herschel's manuscripts include diaries from 1833 to 1845, biographical memoranda, an autobiography, documents about the disposal of her property, her will, diplomas, the royal warrant for her salary, and her astronomical tables. Her commonplace book of astronomical memoranda records her education as an astronomer. Correspondence by various other members of the Herschel family dates from 1721 to 1951. Correspondence and writings by other scientists, such as George Biddell Airy and John Dalton, complete the miscellaneous series.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
