George William Featherstonhaugh was a geologist and traveler, and was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1809.
Epithet: diplomatist
English traveller and geologist in U.S.
George William Featherstonhaugh was a geologist and traveler.
Charles Babbage was a mathematician and inventor.
George William Featherstonhaugh (1780–1866, APS 1809) was a British gentleman-farmer, geologist and diplomat. He promoted the application of scientific principles to farming, and he was instrumental in the construction of a railroad line in his home state of New York. In addition, Featherstonhaugh completed several geological surveys for the United States, including some in the area that was acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. In the late 1830s he served as boundary commissioner to settle the disputed Maine – New Brunswick border.
Featherstonhaugh was the son of George and Dorothy (Simpson) Featherstonhaugh. He was born in London but grew up in Scarborough, near the North Sea. As a boy, Featherstonhaugh showed a strong interest in natural history and mineralogy. However, his father died the year he was born and his mother’s income from her millinery shop did not suffice to pay for a university education. He was employed as an agent for British firms on the continent until 1804, and then worked for a London firm until 1806. In 1807 he moved to the United States. He settled near Schenectady, New York, where his wife Sarah Duane (1775-1828) had inherited a large estate.
Featherstonhaugh promoted agricultural and commercial development by applying scientific principles to farming, stressing proper drainage, and drawing attention to soil composition. He served as secretary for the New York board of agriculture, and promoted the construction of a railway from Schenectady to Albany. In 1826, he received a charter for the Mohawk and Hudson Rail Road Company. That same year, his interest in railroads took him to England.
His stay in England turned out to be less useful for developing Featherstonhaugh’s expertise in railroads than his interest in geology. In England and also during a visit to France, he turned his attention to the study of that science. He worked with several eminent geologists, including William Smith (1769-1839) and Roderick Murchison (1792-1871). In 1827 he returned to the United States with 8,000 fossils and minerals with the intention to make the study of geology his main occupation.
In 1829, after the death of his wife and the destruction of his house by fire, Featherstonhaugh abandoned agricultural pursuits and his position of railway director for good. In 1831 he moved first to New York City and then to Philadelphia. He remarried, published several literary works, and founded the Monthly American Journal of Geology and Natural History . The journal lasted only until 1832, partly because his tendency to attack and disparage the work of leading American scientists alienated him from the scientific community. However, his work helped establish his reputation as a geologist, and in 1834, he became the United States government's first geologist to survey the structure and mineral resources of Arkansas and adjacent territories. His 1844 book Excursion Through the Slave States, which focuses on Arkansas, is remarkable not only for its geological descriptions but also for the observations of the local inhabitants. Much of their dialogue, for example, is rendered in their dialects. Over the next few years, he surveyed and published official and popular reports on that region as well as parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina and several neighboring states.
In 1839 Featherstonhaugh served as boundary commissioner to survey the area disputed between the United States and Britain on the Maine – New Brunswick border. His conclusion that Britain had a rightful claim to the territory earned him much criticism as a traitor to his adopted country. The Webster-Ashburton treaty of 1842 largely ignored his findings, but Britain did not. In 1844 he was appointed the British consul at Le Havre, a position that he held until his death in 1866.
Recognition for his accomplishments as a geologist includes his election to the American Philosophical Society in 1809, and to the Geological Society of London in 1827.
Featherstonhaugh had four children with his first wife Sarah Duane. In 1831, after the death of Sarah, he married Charlotte Williams Carter. They had three children.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963
Title:
Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963
The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

Duane, James, 1733-1797. Duane and Featherstonhaugh family papers, 1666-1900 (bulk 1756-1900).
Title:
Duane and Featherstonhaugh family papers, 1666-1900 (bulk 1756-1900).
Correspondence and papers, 1666- ca. 1900 (mostly 1756 - ca. 1900), of various members of the Duane, Featherstonhaugh, and related families. The major part of the collection is the papers of the New York lawyer, patriot, and land developer James Duane. There are also a substantial number of papers of Duane's son, James Chatham Duane, a lawyer of Duanesburgh and Schenectady, and of his son-in-law George William Featherstonhaugh, a geologist and resident of Schenectady, as well as smaller groups pertaining to Abraham, Anthony, Cornelius, and Mary Duane (wife of James Duane and daughter of Robert Livingston, Jr., third lord of Livingston Manor); and to William North, Hannah E. North, William North Duane, and the latter's mother, Mrs. A.D. Duane. The James Duane papers, ca. 1756-1798, comprise letters, deeds and other land papers, a large group of legal papers, miscellaneous certificates, commissions, bills, memoranda, etc., and pertain to such matters as: his practice of law in New York and New Jersey; relations with Great Britain and political affairs in the colonies prior to the Revolution; New York State's controversy with Massachusetts over the New Hampshire grants, and Duane's own holdings in the disputed area; his activities and interests as New York delegate to the Continental Congress, as the first federal judge for the district of New York, as a New York State senator, and as mayor of New York City; the settling of Duanesburgh, Schenectady County, New York; affairs of the Livingston family and of Livingston Manor; the settlement of estates; his property holdings in the Hardenburgh, Schuyler, and Franklin patents, and in New York City, Otsego County, Ulster County, and Socialborough, New Hampshire (now Rutland, Vermont); New York State boundaries; military and political events during the Revolutionary War; Indian affairs during the war; etc. Some of his more frequent correspondents were George Clinton, Robert R. Livingston, Horatio Gates, Philip Schuyler, Richard Varick, Walter Livingston, William Cockburn, John Myers, James Chalmers of London, Goldsbrow Banyar, Jacob Cuyler, Isabella Graham, John Jay, Robert Livingston, Jr., John McFarland, John Munro, John Patterson, John Morin Scott, Isaac Vrooman, Peter Van Schaack, and George Washington. Duane's notebooks, 1765-1789, contain daily notes on his activities, land transactions, and improvements at Duanesburgh, his Albany law practice, his service as delegate to Congress, including his expenses, Livingston Manor, a trip with Lafayette to Albany, travelling with Luzerne from Morristown to Philadelphia, depreciation of money, costs of lands withheld by the Vermonters, public roads out of Duanesburgh, etc. His legal papers - briefs, notes, declarations, narratives, arguments, etc. - pertain to such cases as: Ryer Schermerhorn vs. Harmanus Brandt; Rev. Joshua Bloomer vs. Robert Hinckman and Philip Edsal, church wardens of the parish of Jamaica; Peter Du Bois ads.. James Jackson ex dem. Daniel Terboss et al.; James Downes vs. Francis Child; John Elam vs. Adam Fisher; Ryer Schermerhorn, John Glen, et al. vs. Jacob Fonda; William Janeway et al. vs. John Frederick Herring; Johannes Hardenburgh ads. James Jackson ex dem. Daniel Terboss; the Rector of Trinity Church and inhabitants of the City of New York ads. James Jackson ex dem. Cornelius Brower; Rex vs. John Van Rensselaer; John Doe ex dem. Philip Verplanck et al. vs. Ezekiel Griffin; and many others. Many of the Featherstonhaugh papers pertain to George W. Featherstonhaugh's interest in agriculture and husbandry (he was corresponding secretary of the New York State Board of Agriculture), and his business interests, particularly during the 1820s, including the purchase of Wade Hampton's horse, Janus. There are also some letters and papers of his son, James Duane Featherstonhaugh, including technical data probably kept by him while working as a surveyor on the 1843-1845 Maine-Quebec boundary survey. The collection includes six recipe or cookbooks belonging to various members of the Duane family, 1740-1874.

Du Ponceau, Peter Stephen, 1760-1844. Papers, 1663-1844 (bulk 1781-1844)
Title:
Peter Stephen Du Ponceau papers 1663-1844
A group of incoming letters relate to law, linguistics, and, less importantly, history, 1781-1827. Among the correspondents are James Fenimore Cooper and John Sergeant on law, George W. Featherstonhaugh, Albert Gallatin, and John Pickering on linguistics, and Jared Sparks on history. The second group consists of Du Ponceau's correspondence and notes, including notes on silk culture, 1820s, copies of the legal opinions of Bushrod Washington, and papers dealing with constitutional questions in Alabama, 1831-1833. Also present in this group are autobiographical letters, 1836-1844, addressed to Robert Walsh and others. The third group contains Du Ponceau's letter books, 1792-1801, 1803-1814, 1820-1842; legal precedents, 1784-1798, 1801-1830; letters, 1818-1843, from John Pickering, the Boston lawyer and judge who shared Du Ponceau's interest in linguistics. Du Ponceau's notes and abstracts concerning the origin of the American Philosophical Society, taken from the minutes of the Junto, the American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge, the American Philosophical Society, and from the Jared Sparks edition of the Works of Benjamin Franklin. The transcriptions of letters sent to Du Ponceau, prepared by Job R. Tyson, a Vice-President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, were to be used for a memorial biography of Du Ponceau, prepared after his death in 1844. Tyson's selection reflects a strong bias toward military and political figures including DeWitt Clinton, James Kent, John Marshall, James Madison, and James Monroe.

Series I contains correspondence relating to a wide variety of topics, including French and English politics, business, trade, religious matters, and personal affairs. Many of the items are letters of introduction. There is also information on John Vaughan’s immigration to America, Joseph Priestley, vaccines and inoculation (with Jefferson's comments on the same), Vaughan's business in Philadelphia, and the American Philosophical Society. Also included in this series are 2 boxes with copies of Vaughan correspondence as well as miscellaneous notes by E. W. Madeira, gathered in the course of his research on Vaughan in the 1930s. Series II consists of three volumes. Included are two of Vaughan's commonplace books. One, entitled, "J. Vaughan's book," May 17, 1779 (47 pp., in Latin; 870/L34), includes mostly Latin notations. The other commonplace book, dated 1783 (ca. 66 pp.; B V 462.c), includes comments on several prominent Americans, such as Benjamin Rush and David Rittenhouse, as well as American society generally. The third volume is a copybook with thirty letters spanning the period 1784 to 1801 (B V462.1). Series III includes material relating to Vaughan's administration of the estate of the Philadelphia merchant Samuel Merrick, 1796-1822 (Vaughan-Merrick Papers, B V462.m; 2 boxes). Title:
[Letter, 1832 Oct. 13, Buckland, Va., to William Buckland, Christ's Church, Oxford, England] [manuscript]. [1832]
Letter from George William Featherstonhaugh to William Buckland, discussing the geology and mineralogy of the area surrounding Buckland, Virginia; while the author briefly touches on the larger geological features and mineral deposits of the entire American East, he focuses on the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains, particularly on a lode of quartz that "has in some instances 30 to 50 per cent of pure gold ... a lode (about 15 feet broad) richer than has ever been found in any country"; the author mentions the possibility of publishing the find in a memoir for the Geological Society, and closes his letter by deprecating John Mardon, who was apparently publishing something for him.
