James Alexander was a lawyer in New Jersey and New York during the eighteenth century. Born in Scotland in 1691, Alexander fought in the Rebellion of 1715, which resulted in the exile of the Stuarts from England. That year, he moved to the United States and became the surveyor general of the Province of New Jersey. He served on both the Council of New York, from 1721 to 1732, and the Council of New Jersey, from 1723 to 1735. From 1723 to 1727, he also served as New Jersey's attorney general. Alexander died in 1756.
James Alexander (1691-1756) was an attorney, surveyor general of New Jersey, attorney general of New Jersey, deputy secretary of New York, boundary commissioner, etc.
James Alexander (1691-1756) was counsel for John Peter Zenger during his trial for libel, 1734-1735, in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, N.Y.
James Alexander was the surveyor-general of the Province of New Jersey and later of New York. In 1718, he became the recorder of Perth Amboy, N.J., where he resided. By 1723, James Alexander had been made deputy-secretary of New York (1718), boundary commissioner of New Jersey and New York (1719), a member of the Councils of New York and New Jersey (1721, 1723 respectively), a member of the provincial bar and attorney-general of New Jersey (1723). In 1725, with his seat in the Council of New Jersey, he tried to make positive legal reforms but in vain. As a result, in 1727, he stepped down as attorney-general of New Jersey.
By the onset of the Revolution, William Alexander (Lord Stirling) opposed the Stamp Act and organized a company of grenadiers. He was suspended from the Council after a heated correspondence with the Loyalist Gov. Franklin. On November 7, 1775, he was made colonel of the 1st New Jersey Regiment and raised and equipped two regiments in the state. In January 1776, with forty volunteers in a pilot boat, he captured at Sandy Hook the British transport Blue Mountain Valley. For this, he was thanked by Congress, and in March of the same year received the commission of brigadier-general in the Continental army. His services would lead to his promotion to major-general on Feb. 19, 1777. Stirling went on to play important roles in notable events like Valley Forge and the inquiry concerning the treachery of Benedict Arnold.

Lawyer, politician, statesman. Fled to America in consequence of involvement with the Rebellion of 1715; studied and practiced law. Made member of the New York Council, 1721, and in 1723, of the New jersey Council; attorney-general of New Jersey, 1723-27. An acitive opponent of Gov. Cosby's arbitrary rule, he was dismissed from Council of New York, 1732, and in 1735 removed from Council of New Jersey. His greatest prominence was attained in 1735 when he, with William Smith, volunteered to serve as counsel to the printer and publisher John Peter Zenger. In course of Zenger's trial, both were declared in contempt and stricken from the roll of attorneys. Reinstated as a member of the bar, Alexander was recalled to both Councils on Cosby's death, and from 1736-56 was active in both capacities. He died at Albany while opposing legislation he considered oppressive to the people of the colony.

Rutherfurd family. Rutherfurd family papers, 1721-1879.
Title:
Rutherfurd family papers, 1721-1879.
Papers, 1721-1879 (bulk 1765-1840), consisting of correspondence, legal papers, deeds and land patents, record and account books, and miscellaneous papers. The material concerns members of the Rutherfurd, Alexander, and Reid families, who were related by marriage; the largest groups of material relate to James Alexander, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Walter Rutherfurd, and John Rutherfurd. There are also papers of mary Rutherfurd, in her capacity as executrix of John Rutherfurd's will. Much of the material has to do with the families' land holdings; members of all three families held shares in the Propriety of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, and in the Second Nine Partners Tract in New York. It includes surveys (including a volume of surveys of the Ramapo Tract in New Jersey dated 1767), rent rolls, memoranda about farms and tracts, legal papers, conveyances, and receipts (many for rents), as well as correspondence. There is a large group of letters relating to General John Reid's attempts to retain ownership of his American properties, which were under threat of confiscation because of his service in the British Army during the Revolution, including some from his daughter, Susanna Robertson; there is also material related to the settlement of his estate. There is another large group of letters from Judge Robert Morris, of New Jersey, and numerous letters from William Wilson of Clermont, which deal with Rutherfurd tenants in Little Nine Partners. Other people who wrote letters to members of the families include Cadwallader Colden, Lewis Morris, Robert Hunter Morris, and Thomas Penn. There is some material relating to the French and Indian War: Walter Rutherfurd's accounts for the 4th Battalion, 60th Royal American Regiment, and a list of provisions for the Niagara Expedition, probably created for William Alexander ca. 1759. Other papers include the will, dated July 28, 1715, of Governor Robert Hunter.

William Burnet papers, 1720-1742 (bulk 1720-1729).
Three folders (62 items) of mostly official signed documents from Burnet's tenure as governor of New York and New Jersey, including land grants, warrants for letters patent, memorials, leases, receipts, bills, and lists of accounts. James Alexander is a frequent co-signer and correspondent, and the collection also includes several bonds from Alexander to Burnet for fairly large sums of money. A few later documents discuss the distribution of Barnet's estate.

Provoost family papers, 1736-1897
Title:
Provoost family papers 1736-1897
The Provoost (Provost) family, of French Huguenot descent, were early settlers of New Amsterdam. David Provoost (1670-1724) was a merchant and Mayor of the City of New York from 1699 to 1700. His nephew John Provoost (d. 1767) was the son of Samuel Provoost and Mary Spratt Provoost Alexander, prominent New York City merchants, and the stepson of James Alexander, a prominent New York lawyer and politician. The Provoost family papers include a manuscript copy of David Provoost's genealogy of the Provoost family of New Amsterdam (compiled 1724), made by John Provoost in 1742, as well as two letters from John Provoost at Curacao to his parents dated 18 May 1736 and 21 June 1736, concerning shipment and prices of goods, addressed to his stepfather, James Alexander, in New York. Also present are some genealogical notes dated 1785, and a letter from Lucy D. Akerly to a Mr. King, 6 Oct. 1897, loosely laid in, concerning the Provoost family.
