A volume containing letters, copies of letters, receipts, accounts, and misc. memoranda relating to Alexander's work in behalf of the children of Gov. Robert Hunter and Gov. William Burnet, including minutes kept by Alexander which record travels, meetings, and various transactions relating to the same matter, and some personal affairs. Most entries are dated in the 1740s.

James Alexander was a lawyer in New Jersey and New York during the eighteenth century. Born in Scotland in 1691, Alexander fought in the Rebellion of 1715, which resulted in the exile of the Stuarts from England. That year, he moved to the United States and became the surveyor general of the Province of New Jersey.
