The Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, in 1992, coordinated the production of a documentary film on the lives and business activities of Colonel Willard F. Rockwell (1888-1978) and his son Willard F. Rockwell, Jr. (1914-1992). The production was underwritten by the Rockwell Foundation. A steering committee from the Historical Society managed the project and included Tom Carroll (Deputy Director of Museum Programs), Bart Roselli (Museum Programs), Marilyn Zoidus (Museum Programs), Betty Arenth (Director of Development), and Carolyn Schumacker (Director of Library and Archives). The Historical Society contracted with Brian Haughlin of Miracle Films to conduct interviews and produce the documentary. Haughlin had previously worked with the staff of the Historical Society on video projects for Schenley Park and Homestead exhibits. The final product was a 30 minute video documentary entitled Twin Empires.WQED Pittsburgh History Series, KDKA/TV and PBS American Experience, were discussed as possible broadcast venues for this documentary.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania was established in 1824 by seven young Philadelphians who were inspired by the patriotic celebrations and renewed civic pride brought on by the Marquis d Lafayette's visit to the United States.
The aim of their fledgling organization was to collect and preserve evidence related to history of the commonwealth, to encourage scholarly research, and to stimulate public interest in American history. This mission remains central to the work of the Historical Society to this day. Throughout the nineteenth century, books, manuscripts, art, and artifacts swelled the collection, and the Society continually outgrew its succession of homes. In 1883, the Historical Society purchased the site it still occupies at 1300 Locust Street in Philadelphia. After extensive renovations, the current building was dedicated in 1910, boasting state-of-the-art fireproof facilities. The late nineteenth century also saw the launch of the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, a quarterly scholarly journal that the Society continues to publish. Throughout the twentieth century, the Society grew as a repository of national significance. In the 1990s, The Historical Society refocused its mission to concentrate on its role as a special collections library. In 2002, it transferred limited custody and control of its art and artifacts collection to the Atwater Kent Museum. Today, HSP's collections include approximately 600,000 printed volumes, nearly 20 million manuscript items, and more than 300,000 graphics and images, with particularly strong holdings for Pennsylvania regional history, Mid-Atlantic family history, and seventeenth through twentieth-century American history. In 2002, this collection was significantly augmented when the Society merged with the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies. The merged institution carries on with the mission of preserving, and sharing the past with a wide range of constituents.
Founded in 1971, the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies was established to promote understanding and respect for America's ethnic, racial, and imigrant diversity. Over its thirty-year history, the organization worked to become the premier museum and research center for scholarship on American immigrant and ethnic experiences. The Institute's rich collections and extensive programming offered scholars and the general public access to the nation's diverse cultural heritage. The Balch officially opened its doors to the public in the midst of the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. Over the next three decades, the Balch would produce seventy exhibitions and collect thousands of publications, manuscripts, and artifacts chronicling the lives and cultures of various ethnic and immigrant groups in the United States. Additionally, the Balch's presence in the community increased significantly as other organizations, including the Immigration History Society and Temple University's Center for Immigration Research, shared the institution's building during periods of its history. Finding it difficult to continue due to financial hardships and other circumstances the Balch merged with The Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 2002.

Carson, Hampton L. (Hampton Lawrence), 1852-1929. Hampton L. Carson papers, 1715-1941; bulk 1870-1930.
Title:
Hampton L. Carson papers, 1715-1941; bulk 1870-1930.
A diverse amount of materials related to the legal profession and to Carson's many personal interests are contained in this collection. Legal practice correspondence and dockets extend from 1871 until 1941; beginning around 1920, however, the materials in this series increasingly pertain to the legal work of his son, Joseph Carson. Documents exist from Hampton Carson's tenures as attorney general of Pennsylvania, as president of the American Bar Association, and as president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. His work with the 1887 Constitutional Centennial Commission and with the Pennsylvania Commission on Constitutional Amendment and Revision are also represented, as are his affiliations with many law and historical organizations. The nearly one thousand political cartoons in this collection, which were clipped from newspapers and span the years 1863-1904, primarily depict Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker, Senator Matthew S. Quay, and Senator Boies Penrose. Carson's portrait collection of lawyers, judges, and statesmen contains images of well over one hundred notable men, and his letters and ephemera collection contains handwriting samples, newspaper clippings, and other materials related to many of the same men.

Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Forges and Furnaces collection , 1727-1921.
Title:
Forges and Furnaces collection , 1727-1921.
The Forges and Furnaces Collection at The Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) represents a significant repository of the original forge and furnace books that documents the rise-and-fall of the charcoal iron industry of Pennsylvania. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, due to its rich iron deposits, southeastern Pennsylvania was the major center of American iron production. As time passed, the industry moved steadily westward from the Schuylkill Valley where it started to the Susquehanna Valley and its tributaries; to the Juniata River and the ports on the Union Canal; and eventually to Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania. In time, charcoal gave way to coke, and iron to steel. The collection documents that progression.

Historical Society of Pennsylvania,. Historical Society of Pennsylvania World War II propaganda collection (1939-1946).
Title:
Historical Society of Pennsylvania World War II propaganda collection (1939-1946).
HSP's collection of World War II propaganda offers a glimpse into the visual world associated with the home front during the late 1930s to the mid 1940s. It is mainly comprised of posters, magazine advertisements, flyers, and pamphlets from a variety of governmental and nongovernmental agencies. The vast majority of the items focus on the European war and, with the exception of some of the war bond ads, make little mention of the Pacific conflict. The collection has been inventoried alphabetically by subject. Large materials have been placed into fourteen folders in a flat box (Box 1), while small materials take up four folders in a small document box (Box 2). Most items are in their original forms, though a few posters have been mounted onto cardboard. Making up a significant portion of the collection are two folders of war bond posters and advertisements from the Victory Fund Committee and other agencies (Box 1, Folders 13-14). Box 1, Folder 11 contains recruiting posters from the U.S. Coast Guard, Coast Guard Women's Reserve ("Spars"), Marine Corps, Marine Corps Women's Reserve, Army, Navy, WAVES, and Air Corps. Items associated with the Seabees, some of which deal with recruitment, have been placed in Box 1, Folder 12. Recruitment posters and ads for U.S. Civil Service Commission and other civil service jobs targeting both women and men can be found in Box 1, Folder 3. There are Office of War Information posters warning against spreading rumors or giving information to the enemy in Box 1, Folder 2. The collection also includes a few British war propaganda posters, posters warning against forest fires (Box 1, Folder 1), and a series of Esso ads featuring "Famous gremlins you should know" (Box 2, Folder 3). Additionally, there are a number of unique items, including examples of V-mail (Box 1, Folder 8), Christmas cards (Box 2, Folder 2), and a few hand-painted placards. Throughout the collection, researchers will find items from public agencies such as the U.S. Army Ordnance Department, Railroad Manpower Mobilization Committee, War Food Administration, Federal Housing Administration, Social Security Board, U.S. Employment Service, Internal Revenue Service, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boy Scouts of America, and Children's Bureau Commission on Children in Wartime. There are also a few posters from private companies such as F.W. Woolworth. A few items originated in Philadelphia offices, but most were printed and distributed by the national government.

Society Miscellaneous collection, 1800-1937.
The materials included in this collection are varied, and cover many significant events in the history of Pennsylvania and the country. Several documents relating to William Penn are in this collection, including his treaty with Tamanend, a Lenni-Lenape chief, and the charter of Philadelphia. There is a facsimile of the "Olive Branch" petition, a document written by Thomas Jefferson and John Dickinson in 1775 as a means of reconciliation between the American colonies and King George III of Great Britain, as well as a list of books ordered by Benjamin Franklin for the creation of the Library Company. Several documents relate to major wars, including the American Revolution, the War of 1812 (including the Act of War confirmed by James Madison and Congress), the Mexican-American War, Civil War and World War I. The collection also contains pieces of cultural interest such as trolley tokens; transportation tickets; business cards; invitations to prominent parties and social gatherings; propaganda from the early 20th century, including pieces promoting hygiene; and various forms of obsolete currency, including Revolutionary and Confederate money. There is also material pertaining to race relations, such as a petition to allow Blacks the use of trolleys, Owen Brown's "A Declaration of Liberty," records concerning relations with Indians and a petition for better treatment of the insane in city institutions. The Society Miscellaneous Collection includes a wide variety of materials relating to Pennsylvania and spanning several centuries. The majority of the collection is comprised of documents from and relate to governing bodies, civil organizations and societies in and around Pennsylvania. Examples range from official documents, such as petitions and surveys, to ephemera like tokens and tickets. Other items include watermarks, passports, sheet music, and poetry. While the collections spans from the 1670s to the 1930s, a significant portion of the papers date from the time of the Revolutionary War.

Dunn, Richard S. Papers, 1765-1995 (bulk 1950-1993).
Title:
Papers, 1765-1995 (bulk 1950-1993).
The Richard S. Dunn Papers represent the career and achievement of the distinguished Penn faculty as teacher, author and administrator. The Administrative files series documents his experience as Chairman of the Department of History of the University of Pennsylvania as well as his commitments as a senior faculty member to many committees of the School of Arts and Sciences or of the University. Dunn's teaching experience is well recorded in the Teaching files series. Included in it are all kinds of teaching material, ranging from syllabi, bibliographical data, teaching notes to examination questions, recommendations written for the students, and a bounteous collection of Senior History Honors papers he advised from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Dunn's teaching at the University of Michigan as a visiting professor, 1969-1970, and his term as Harmsworth Professor of the Queen's College, Oxford University, 1987-1988, are two additional features. The Publications, Presentations, Manuscripts series includes books and articles Dunn has published, papers he presented to various academic institutions and symposiums, and some unpublished manuscripts. The Other Professional Activities files record Dunn's participation in the activities of many academic and professional institutions, among them the American Historical Association, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Institute of Early American History and Culture, and the McNeil Center for Early American Studies. Two more components of the collection deserve a special note. The Glass Slides series consists of over 140 pieces of slides Dunn used as teaching aids to his history courses. The series covers six subjects--early American bank notes (issued between 1775 and 1865), British statesmen and London landscape, American Far West, Italian statesmen, fugitive slaves, and World War I. The William P. Dunn Papers include over six hundred pages of manuscript by Richard S. Dunn's father annotating a selection of works written by the English author and theologian Richard Hook.

Shoemaker, Edna Cooke. Edna Cooke Shoemaker drawings and papers, 1818-1980, 1908-1960 (bulk dates).
Title:
Edna Cooke Shoemaker drawings and papers, 1818-1980, 1908-1960 (bulk dates).
Collection includes drawings, prints, sketches, sketchbooks, and marionette backdrops done by Edna Cooke Shoemaker. Original illustrations for Heidi, Stories of Mrs. Molesworth, East o' the Sun West o' the Moon, Rip van Winkle, and Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes, as well as cover art for the Ladies Home Journal are found. A number of illustrations for a story entitled "The Moon Lady" are also in the collection, but her illustrations were evidently never used in an edition of that book. Prints made from some of these illustrations are in the collection as well. After Mrs. Shoemaker gave up book illustration, she began putting on marionette shows, and backdrops for those shows, plus a few scripts, are in the collection. Another project she tried was illustrating Bible stories in an ancient manner, using archaeological finds from the Babylon area as inspiration for illustrations for the stories of Noah and Abraham and ancient Egyptian art for the story of Moses. She was not successful in finding a publisher, but kept her drawings and mock-ups of books. As well are found printed illustrations done by other artists (probably collected for inspiration), family letters and assorted memorabilia, a letter from author Jack London to Edna's mother, photographs of the Cooke and Shoemaker families, toy theater backdrops and characters (some 19th century, some reproductions), stories, diaries of trips to Europe, greeting cards and birth announcements (some designed by Mrs. Shoemaker, some 19th century), a 19th century scrapbook, some Cooke and Shoemaker genealogy, a scrapbook about Edna's schoolmates, a yearbook from the Philadelphia High School for Girls, a collection of autographs of musicians, some assorted publications, and a number of other items collected by members of the Shoemaker or Cooke families. Included with the photographs are a picture of Mrs. Shoemaker's father taken before the Battle of Antietam, a photo of a Chippewa chief, a photo of Mrs. Shoemaker at her easel, views of the Constitution Centennial celebration in Philadelphia, and views of 19th century Florida. Many photos are of the Shoemaker home and garden in Media.

Title:
Society print collection, ca. 1800-ca. 1950.
The Society Print collection provides a rich visual catalog of various local, regional, national, and international areas, locales, institutions, and scenes. Despite the vast range of subjects under which the collection is arranged, the majority of the collection is centered on Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. The images date from the early 1800s to the mid twentieth century. Items in the collection primarily include reproductions of prints, drawings, lithographs, etchings, woodcuts, and photographs, many of which have been clipped from newspapers, magazines, and calendars. There are also postcards, greeting cards, and invitations. Additionally, the collection includes scattered original artworks such as watercolors and drawings, as well as original photographs.

Logan, James, 1674-1751. At a council held at Edward [unreadable] 1712 May 19.
Title:
At a council held at Edward [unreadable] 1712 May 19.
Photostat of a document purportedly by James Logan giving an account of a meeting. The document illustrates 34 wampum belts, presented by the Delaware Indian delegation, and gives their meanings. The place where the meeting was held appears to start with Edward or Edwards, but the remainder of the word is not decipherable. The council was presumably held somewhere near Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Other individuals attending the meeting included Edward Shippen, Richard Hill, and other members of the government. Also included with the Photostats are two letters from 1942 between Julian P. Boyd, who was a librarian at Princeton, Edwin K. Burnett, and George G. Heye. Their letters discuss the manuscript and the whereabouts of the wampum belts mentioned in the manuscript. Boyd states that the original manuscript may have been purchased earlier that year by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

The Balch Family Papers consist of seven boxes and forty-three volumes that span from 1755 to 1963 with the bulk of the collection dating between 1870 and 1920. The materials in this collection offer a glimpse into the family history, personal lives, and interests of the Balch family, mainly Thomas (1821-1877) and his sons Edwin Swift (1856-1927) and Thomas Willing (1866-1927). The majority of the collection is comprised of the incoming and outgoing correspondence of members of the Balch family, their informal writings, and numerous volumes of published works, either penned by or property of a Balch family member. The collection has been divided into six series:Thomas Balch and Emily Swift Balch (1780-1914); Edwin Swift Balch and Eugenia MacFarlane Balch (1859-1924); Elise Willing Balch (1881-1914); Thomas Willing Balch and Dulany Whiting Balch (1867-1929); Early Balches and related families (1755-1963); and Miscellaneous photographs, volumes, and artifacts (1755-1909). The items in each series are concerned with a specific Balch family member except for last series, which is comprised of materials with unidentifiable owners. Series V contains correspondence, legal documents, notes, and newspaper clippings related to miscellaneous Balch family members, such as Lewis, Alfred, and Stephen Bloomer Balch, and Balch relatives, including John Swift and Joseph Shippen.
