Smith would have no objection to the part of Mosca if he had not been in possession of the part of Volpone for these 5 years and had rehearsed it 20 times while Woodward was in the company. Since Colman sent the part of Volpone to Mr. Boss, he'd prefer to be considered for a longer part in the Epicoene which he has heard is much improved under his hands.

Autograph letter signed from Charlotte Walsingham to Mrs. Garrick [manuscript], [17]88 July 23.
She waited until she had seen the pictures to tell Mrs. Garrick how pleased she was with the present. The head of Ben Jonson is of itself a great treasure, being one of the best she has ever seen. But having been in the collection of Mr. Garrick and coming from the kind and graceful stand of her "chere Voisine," Mrs. Garrick makes them inestimable. She longs to put them in her favorite room.

Autograph letters signed from Clement Mansfield Ingleby, Ilford, Essex and elsewhere, to various recipients [manuscript], 1856-1883.
Correspondents: T.F. Dillon Corker, F.G. Fleay, Charles [Edward] Flower, J.H. Friswell, William Heinemann, the mayor [of Stratford-upon-Avon], Samuel Neil, J. Parker Norris, M.W. Rooney, and others. Letters (5), (7), (35) to Fleay express the opinion that the Henslowe Diary had been tampered with, probably by Collier; (11-16) discuss the reasons for assigning a 1605 date to Ben Jonson's letter to the Earl of Salisbury, written while he and Chapman were in prison, presumably for writing Eastward Ho! not Sejanus; (38-39) discuss the sources of Hamlet and the possibility that part of the 1603 quarto may have been written in shorthand. (49-59) to Heinemann discuss his bibliography, Goethes Faust in England und Amerika and suggests additions; (50) states that he believes his "collection of English Fausts unrivalled." (61) to the Mayor [of Stratford-upon-Avon] discusses the possibility of opening Shakespeare's grave which Ingleby favored. (65-117) to Norris discuss the text and interpretation of Shakespeare's works, certain word usages, the works of Shakespeare scholars in England and America, the quarrels within the New Shakspere Society, centering around Furnivall, and their mutual interest in Shakespeare's portraits; (68) gives his reasons for thinking that "the Stratford bust is the best authenticated likeness" of Shakespeare; (82) discusses the authenticity of the death mask; (116) posits the belief that the Collier family will try to saddle Peter Cunningham with Collier's forgeries after his death. (118) to Rooney requests any information he has on the newly discovered copy of the 1603 quarto of Hamlet. Also, 9 letters and 1 postcard to Ingleby, 1878-1883, from The Autotype Co., F.G. Fleay (with a slip by Ingleby attached), F.J. Furnivall, L. Toulmin Smith and S. Timmins; 2 references sent to the Senate of the University of London on behalf of Ingleby, by R.G. Latham and the Birmingham and Midland Institute, January-February 1861; and several newspaper obituaries of Ingleby scattered throughout the correspondence.

An account of the many fine seats of noblemen etc. I have seen with other observations made during my residence in [southern] England [manuscript], 1763 December 23.
The record of a trip which the writer began on October 27, 1762, when he sailed from Dublin with his parents. He spent much of his time in Oxford and was presented with a degree ad eundem in order to hear the lectures of Blackstone. He passed through Stratford-upon-Avon and in London saw Garrick in the role of Abel Drugger and of Lear (p. 36). He describes in some detail the landscaping of the country houses he saw and occasionally adds an illustration. On p. 19 he refers to a line of poetry as by his [great] uncle [Thomas Parnell], hence the attribution of this work to Sir John. The narrative breaks off abruptly.

Carew, Thomas, 1595?-1639?. Commonplace book, [ca. 1660].
Title:
Commonplace book, [ca. 1660].
A mixture of poetry and prose, compiled from many contemporary sources, with a wealth of epigrams and epitaphs. The manuscript is written on 108 pages in one hand, with short poems and quotations added laterally in the margins of many pages. From the fact that there appear several quotations from Wharton's almanacs of 1656 and 1657, it would seem that the book was compiled a short time after that. Many of the epigrams and epitaphs were copied, according to notes by the compiler, from manuscript books of friends named Hilton and Lee, and from the miscellanies, Wits Recreations and Wit and Drollery. Some of the poems are merely fragments of longer pieces, others are full texts. Among those identified are some by Ben Jonson, Thomas Carew, Thomas Randolph, and John Cleveland. The prose, like the verse, consists of mere quotations as well as longer passages and full letters. There are copies of letters by Sir Henry Wotton and by Cleveland.
