Title:
Papers, 1964-1988.
Posner's papers were in a state of disarray when deposited; there appear to be large gaps in documentation. The bulk of the papers in the Posner collection are divided between the Assembly years and those with the Workers' Compensation Board. There is relatively sparse coverage of Posner's activities before 1964, including his participation in the civil rights movement. There are reminiscences concerning the Marches on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but no contemporary documents. Some 500 photographs, mostly publicity shots of Posner and various New York State politicians, have been separated from the collection and are located in the Wagner Archives Seymour Posner non-print collection (NP45). Eight audio tapes, containing recordings of the Ombudsman program on WEVD as well as speeches by Posner have also been separated to non-print collections. There are no major correspondents, but there are routine papers from John Lindsay, Hugh Carey, Robert Steingut, Arthur Cooperman, members of the Assembly and Abraham Beame. The collection is organized into three series, grouped by the two major divisions in the nature of his work. Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject titles, and documents are arranged chronologically within the folders. The bulk of the collection is comprised of correspondence and clippings, along with legislative drafts, press releases, flyers, newsletters, lists, transcripts of speeches and reports.

Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Herbert Brownell Jr. Additional Papers. 1897 - 1996. Photographs
Title:
Herbert Brownell Jr. Additional Papers. 1897 - 1996. Photographs
This series consists of photographic prints, slides, negatives, transparencies, and postcards accumulated by Herbert Brownell, Jr., throughout his lifetime. Many of the images are of members of Brownell and his family, including studio portraits and informal snapshots. Several cabinet card portraits of Brownell's ancestors were made as long ago as the 1880s or 1890s. Other family photographs date to Brownell's childhood and youth and that of his first wife, Doris McCarter Brownell. There are many photos of the Brownells' children. There are also group portraits of Brownell and his family taken up into the 1980s or early 1990s, as well as some photos featuring artist Marion “Riki” Taylor, to whom Brownell was briefly married. Photographs from Brownell's youth include some from his time at the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of the Society of Innocents and the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Some photographs may be from Brownell's long employment at law firm Lord, Day & Lord, although they are not labeled. Brownell appears at meetings of the American Hotel Association and the Hotel Association of New York City. Several photographs show him with groups at restaurant “21” in New York City. Photos of Brownell's early political activity include a few from his runs for state assemblyman in New York in the 1930s, as well as a number taken while Brownell was campaign manager for Thomas E. Dewey's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns during the 1940s. Photos of the candidates and of examples of political advertising are present in the series. Many photos in this series were taken during or just before Herbert Brownell's term as Attorney General during the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. These include a small number of photos taken on Eisenhower's 1952 trip to Korea. A set of black and white snapshots shows the members of Eisenhower's Cabinet riding in the 1953 Inauguration Day Parade. Photos feature Attorney General Brownell with the President's Cabinet, at the Department of Justice, at the FBI National Academy, at the White House, at Camp David, and at meetings of the American Bar Association, Inter-American Bar Association, and National Association of Attorneys General. Brownell instituted the Attorney General's Honors Program at the Department of Justice, the first classes of which appear in group photographs with Brownell. He is shown speaking at meetings with the National Industrial Conference Board and the Zionist Organization of America. He is also shown addressing the press, courts, and committees on such topics as governmental investigations, internal security, communism, and wiretapping. Brownell is pictured receiving several honorary degrees during and after his term as Attorney General, including one from the National University of Ireland. Organizations that Brownell was involved in and are depicted in the series include the Bohemian Club, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and the governing council of the White Burkett Miller Center at the University of Virginia. Later involvement of Herbert Brownell with the federal government includes dealing with issues of water rights and water quality management on the lower Colorado River, investigating geothermal resources in California's Imperial Valley, and being vice-chairman of the Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. He also is pictured with the Congressional sponsors of the 25th Amendment and the supporting American Bar Association Committee, and, in another photo, with the Coalition for Adequate Judicial Compensation while testifying before the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Courts, Civil Liberties and the Administration of Justice. Some locations where Herbert Brownell appears in photographs in this series include the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, Liberia; Middle Temple Hall in London; Peru State College, Nebraska; the Bohemian Grove in California; and Plymouth, Massachusetts. He also appears at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library at conferences on constitutional issues and civil rights. Additional persons of interest who appear in photographs in this series include Sherman Adams, Hawthorne Arey, William H. Avery, Stanley N. Barnes, Birch Bayh, Griffin B. Bell, James V. Bennett, Ezra Taft Benson, Omar Bradley, John W. Bricker, Baron Nigel Bridge of Harwich, Warren E. Burger, W. Randolph Burgess, George H. W. Bush, Clifford P. Case, Emanuel Celler, Benjamin R. Rowland Evans Jr. and Robert D. Novak papers, 1948-2008.
Papers, 1948-2008, of Rowland Evans Jr. (1921-2001) and Robert D. Novak (1931-2009), one of the nation's longest journalistic partnerships. Evans and Novak were best known for their newspaper column "Inside Report" and the "Evans & Novak" cable television program. Novak alone was known for work on the "Crossfire" and "Capital Gang" television programs. Documentation of their joint and individual writing and reporting includes a complete run of "Inside Report" with an index; transcripts, video, and audio documentation of "Evans & Novak;" articles, newsletters, drafts, and research material for freelance writings and books such as "The Agony of the GOP," "Lyndon B. Johnson: the Exercise of Power," "Nixon in the White House," and Novak's lengthy autobiography, "The Prince of Darkness." Supplementing the writings and reporting are extensive subject files containing additional interviews and primary and secondary research material on many topics. Research on the presidencies of Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and William Clinton is particularly strong. Also included are reader and viewer mail, general correspondence, political polls, scheduling files, and some separate files of Rowland Evans.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Title:
Jerry Bock collection of audio-visual recordings 1960-2006
Collection consists of audio-visual materials representing selected productions that Jerry Bock wrote between 1960 and 2006. While there are some items containing complete audio or video productions of the shows, the majority are unpublished pre-production materials, including rehearsals, demo recordings, and "working copies" of songs, including a song about the race horse "Fly so free". There are also some documentary materials, such as awards show footage and radio shows about the productions. Many of the items are from Bock's more popular Broadway shows, including Fiddler on the Roof, The Rothschilds, She Loves Me, and Fiorello! Also represented are some of Bock's less well known works including 1040, (a show about the tax code), Happy Birthday Mr. Abbott, and Regarding the Lindsay Years, as well as many of his children's musicals including Brandon Finds his Star, The Land of Broken Toys, Danny and the Dragon, The Magic Journey, and the Adventures of Pinocchio.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Negatives Collection, 1930-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Negatives Collection, 1930-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the <i>People's World</i>. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the <i>Daily Worker</i> and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, including many local and national labor unions, particularly those affiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
David B. McCall papers, 1939-1999 and undated bulk 1980-1994.
Collection is comprised of clippings, correspondence, business reports, photographs, scrapbooks, speeches and writings, videocassettes, audio tapes and phonograph records. In particular, three main areas of McCall's career are represented: as an advertising executive and partner in agencies such as Young & Rubicam, Ogilvy Benson & Mather, McCaffrey & McCall, David J. Mahoney, Inc., the Sawyer Miller Group, and Shepardson Stern and Kaminsky; as a corporate director for the Hunter Fan Company, Save the Children, and two local radio broadcasting corporations, among others; and as a humanitarian involved with organizations such as the Committee for the Support of Roe v. Wade, CARE, and Refugees International. In addition, there is a substantial body of McCall's speeches and writings that reflect both the wide range of his professional and personal interests and commitments as well as his status as a public intellectual in high demand, as well as a number of files containing correspondence, clippings and articles concerning David Ogilvy, McCall's mentor in advertising. Major advertising campaigns represented in this collection include Mercedes Benz of North America, North American Philips, Life magazine, the American Can Company, Lever Brothers Company, and the Zippo Manufacturing Company, along with public relations work for such clients as the National Football League, Puerto Rico Telephone Company (PRTC), and the Regional Bell Operating Companies. Major humanitarian issues documented in the collection include the "Unsell" protest movement against the war in Vietnam, tobacco advertising aimed at children, land mine removal, refugee welfare, and support of abortion rights. McCall was also involved in political campaigns for a number of notable candidates, such as John Lindsay (New York), Harvey Gannt (North Carolina), George Kevarian (Massachusetts), Ramón Mitra (Philippines) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru). While McCall is recognized as the originator of the idea behind the popular children's educational television series Schoolhouse Rock!, the collection contains very little documentation concerning that project apart from a copy of the original soundtrack.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
