Robert Troup was born on Aug. 19, 1757 in Hanover (N.J.). He was a lawyer, politican, land speculator, and investor. He lived in New York (State) and New Jersey. He married Jennet Goelet (1878-1840) on Feb. 18, 1787. Together they had six children: Catherine, Robert R., Louis, Charlotte, Charles (b.and d. 1794), and Charles Goelet. Charlotte Troup married Frederic Bronson (1850-1900). Robert Troup died on Jan. 14, 1832. The family is related by marriage to the Bronson and Brinckerhoff families. Robert Troup (1757-1832) was a lawyer and land agent from New York State.

He served as an officer with the American army during the Revolution, practiced law in Albany and New York City, was elected to the State Assembly, and in 1796 was appointed judge of the United States district court of New York. From 1801 to 1832 he was land agent of the Pulteney Estate of England for properties in western New York.
