James Read was employed by agents of the Pulteney Estate. The son of William Read, he married Hannah Hammond. His son, James H. Read, a physician, accompanied Ansel J. McCall to California in 1849-1850, where he died. A second son, Lazarus Read, a lawyer, was also a friend of McCall.
