Edward Hitchcock was an eminent 19th-century scientist, minister and educator; principal of Deerfield Academy and Congregational minister in Conway, Mass.; variously professor of Chemistry, Natural History, Natural Theology and Geology at Amherst College, 1826-1864, and third president, 1845-1854. Appointed State Geologist of Massachusetts, 1830; Geologist of the first district of New York, 1836; and Geologist of Vermont, 1857. Orra White Hitchcock, whom he married in 1821, was a scholar and artist who accompanied her husband on many of his scientific expeditions and illustrated much of his work. Six children: Mary, Edward (AC 1849), Catharine Hitchcock Storrs, Jane Hitchcock Putnam, Charles (AC 1856), and Emily Hitchcock Terry.

Orra White Hitchcock, wife of geologist and Amherst College president Edward Hitchcock, whom she married in 1821, was a scholar and artist who accompanied her husband on many of his scientific expeditions and illustrated much of his work. They had six children: Mary, Edward (AC 1849), Catharine Hitchcock Storrs, Jane Hitchcock Putnam, Charles (AC 1856), and Emily Hitchcock Terry.
