University of New Hampshire

In 1861, the United States federal government approved the Morrill Act which set aside land in each state for the founding of public higher education. In 1862, the New Hampshire state legislature accepted the grant of 80,000 acres of public lands on which to set up a university. It was not until 1866 however, that the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was incorporated by the state legislature. They started the process of creating the By-laws and the Charter in 1862 and these have been revised periodically.

The University of New Hampshire was originally founded as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in Hanover, NH in 1866. The College moved to Durham, NH in 1893 and was chartered as the University of New Hampshire in 1923. The College celebrated its 75th year in 1941.

In 1941, at the request of the faculty, President Fred Englehardt organized six committees and charged them with the responsibility of formulating a "New Hampshire Charter" which would describe the roles of the faculty beyond the rules and regulations covered in the Faculty Handbook.
