The original Board of Trustees of the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts consisted of 5 members chosen by the State and 4 members chosen by the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth College. While sharing location and Trustee members, New Hampshire College and Dartmouth were still separate schools. The president of Dartmouth, Asa Dodge Smith, was the first president of the Board of Trustees for New Hampshire College. This situation persisted from 1866-1893, at which time the Boards of both colleges decided it would be best to separate. New Hampshire College moved to Durham in 1893 and changed its name to the University of New Hampshire in 1923.
