John Sherman, 1823-1900, was a representative and a senator from Ohio, and the brother of U.S. General William T. Sherman. He was born in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, and attended the public schools and an academy in that state. He left school to work as an engineer on canal projects and later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1844. He began practice in Mansfield, Ohio, and then moved to Cleveland. Elected representative on the Republican ticket, he served from March 4, 1855, to March 21, 1861, and was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1861 and served until his resignation on March 4, 1897. He was appointed Secretary of State in the cabinet of President William McKinley and served from March 1897, to his resignation in April 1898. Sherman then retired to private life.
Samuel Sydney McClure,1857-1949, was an editor, publisher, and founder of McClure's Magazine.

John Sherman (1823-1900) was an American statesman who served as U.S. Congressman (1855-61), U.S. Senator (1861-77, 1881-97), U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1877-81), and U.S. Secretary of State (1897-98). He is best remembered for authoring the Sherman Antitrust Act aimed at limiting monopolies and cartels in the United States.
