Moore family.

Hide Profile

The best-known member of the Moore family was probably Charles Chilton Moore, one of the grandsons of Barton W. Stone, founder of the Disciples of Christ. At one time a minister, Moore later promoted atheism and free thought. He published the BLUE GRASS BLADE in Lexington, Ky., and in 1899 served five months in the federal prison in Columbus, Ohio for blasphemy and the advocacy of "free love." He was pardoned by President William McKinley. Moore wrote three books: THE RATIONAL VIEW proclaimed his opinions on religion and free thought; BEHIND THE BARS 31498 was a memoir of his imprisonment; and DOG FENNEL IN THE ORIENT described Moore's travels late in life in Europe, Egypt and the Holy Land. He had a sister, Mary Moore Brent.
