Warner M. Bateman, noted Cincinnati, Ohio, lawyer, pursued a long and distinguished career not only in the field of law, but also in the world of nineteenth century Republican politics. Bateman served as an Ohio state senator 1865-1868, and as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio 1869-1877. He played a prominent role at the 1880 Republican National Convention, heading the campaign of John Sherman as Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States.

Warner M. Bateman (1827-1897), a noted Cincinnati, Ohio, lawyer, pursued a long and distinguished career not only in the field of law, but also in the world of nineteenth-century Republican politics. As an Ohio State Senator from 1865 to 1868, Bateman's interests included the organization, control, and abuses of railway companies, and the general prevention of increases in corporate privileges. Bateman served as the U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio from 1869 to 1877. In this position, he oversaw the breaking up of the notorious "Whiskey Ring," and involved himself in the litigation concerning purchase of land for government buildings in Cincinnati and for the construction of a bridge over the Ohio River. Bateman played a prominent role at the 1880 Republican National Convention, where he headed the campaign for the election of John Sherman as the Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States.
