Colonel of the 75th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg and was promoted to Brigadier General.

Major General (MG) Mortimer D. Leggett served as a civilian aide to General McClellan in western Virginia during 1861. In January 1862, he was a Colonel of the 78th Ohio at Fort Donelson and Shiloh. During November 1862, Leggett was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers. He commanded the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, XVII Corps during the Vicksburg campaign. Leggett then commanded the 3rd Division of the XVII Corps from the Atlanta to the Carolinas campaigns. In August 1865, he was promoted to Major General of Volunteers.
