Biographical notes:
William James, Jr. (1882-1961), son of famous psychologist William James, was an American painter who worked as a painting critic for the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and as its director from 1930-1937. While at the Museum School, James met Mrs. Kathryn A. Hodgman of Kalamazoo, Michigan through Edward W. Forbes. James and Hodgman studied together at his summer home in Chocorua, New Hampshire during the summer of 1934.

James, an American painter, was associated with the school at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as critic of painting (1913-1925) and acting director (1930-1937). He was son of the psychologist William James. Alice Rutherford Runnells James was his wife.

This collection contains mainly the correspondence to Mrs. Hodgman from William James Jr. Most of the letters are from James Jr., offering artistic advice on composition, perspective, structure, and other artistic stylized devices. Also included are letters from Judson Smith of the Woodstock School, and a postcard to Hodgman from James' wife, Alice.
