Robert Schumann was a German composer and pianist. As a young man, he studied with Friedrich Wieck; when he asked to marry Wieck's daughter, Clara, he was denied, and the young couple waited four years to wed. Although Schumann's concert career was compromised by a hand injury, he wrote many well-received songs for piano. Many were written for his wife, Clara, who became a celebrated virtuoso, and others for the couple's seven children. Schumann struggled with mood swings, and died in an asylum in 1856.
