Marie and Bernhard Mahler were Gustav Mahler's parents. Leopoldine Mahler and Justine Rosé (née Mahler) were two of Gustav's sisters. Leopoldine married Ludwig Quittner in 1884. Justine later married Arnold Rosé, in 1902. Josephine Poisl was a young woman with whom Gustav Mahler had a romantic relationship in Iglau, his home town. Fanni and I. Poisl were Josephine's parents (her father was the town postmaster), and Anna Poisl was her sister. Melion was a tutor or school teacher, and a confidant of Mahler in that relationship. Gustav Mahler was a Bohemian conductor and composer of Jewish descent. He became famous as a conductor in a series of regional opera houses, spending ten years in Vienna before emigrating to New York in 1907. Most of his year was spent conducting; during the summer, he composed lieder and symphonies, and is known for his his long, complex, strikingly original and musically rich compositions. His best known works are Das Lied van der Erde and the Kindertotenlieder.

Gustav Mahler, Austrian composer and conductor. Das klagende Lied, a cantata for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra, was composed in 1880 in three parts: Waldmärchen, Der Spielmann, and Hochzeitsstück. A revised version, without Waldmärchen, was published in 1899.
