The papers contain correspondence, two typescripts of Fieldings autobiography, All the Lives I Have Lived (Dorrance and Co., 1972), and other works, including poems, essays, and reviews authored by Fielding over the years, and case histories (1923-1963), i.e. correspondence with readers of Fieldings work in sexology and psychology who wrote to him for advice on personal matters (e.g. Masturbation, homosexuality, birth control, nervous disorders and phobias). The collection also contains printed material form the 1920s concerning sexology, psychology and other matters. Other correspondence concerns Fieldings work at Tiffanys, and personal reflections. The papers span sixty years of activities in the life of William J. Fielding, although the greatest bulk of material were accumulated after 1963, during Fieldings retirement years. The collection reflects Fieldings diverse pursuits: professionally, he was employed by the Tiffany Company and Louis Tiffany Foundation from the second decade of the twentieth century until his retirement in 1963: in private life, he was an author, poet and editor distinguished by his popular writings in the field of sexology and psychology. The collection clarifies the course of Fieldings carreer as described in his autobiography and listing in Whos Who in America, but also describes the personal history of an aging, middle-class individual in America between 1960 and 1973. The majority of this collection consists of personal correspondence between Fielding and less famous colleagues, readers, researchers and friends. In his later years, these provide summaries of his career that are more personal than his autobiography, including letters that describe Fieldings struggle with emphysema and arthritis and his wifes affliction with cerebral artereo-sclerosos. Fielding explored this problem in an essay entitled The Plight of the Aged, Middle-class Sick. Fieldings participation in the American Social Hygiene Association, The American Birth Control League, the Eugenics Educational Society, the Society for Constructive Birth Control and Racial Progress, the Ethical Humanist Societies of Greater New York, the Freethinkers of America, and the Thomas Paine Foundation are illuminated through correspondence with officials and members of these organizations. Among Fieldings correspondents in the Birth Control, Sexual Reform and Psychology movements between 1917 and 1972 were Drs William J. Robinbson, Harry Benjamin, Victor Robinson, Samuel Schmalhausen, and Andre Tridon. Other correspondents include Marie C. Stopes, Margaret Sanger, and Havelock Ellis. His relationship with Emanuel Haldmann-Julius, owner and editor of the Little Blue Books is evident in correspondence with Haldmann-Julius, his family, and his biographers (1919-1973). Issues of Freethought and Rationalism are displayed in correspondence with Joseph Lewis (1923-1968), Alfred Korzybski (on general semantics and mathematical reasoning, 1921-1933), Martin J. Martin (1966-1971) and Madalyn Murray OHair (1969-1971). Fieldings expertise in Tiffany artworks and the history of the Tiffany firm generated considerable correspondence with collectors and other parties interested in the authenticity of pieces and his collection of the firm. Fieldings employment at Tiffanys also placed him in apposition as ex-officio income tax consultant for the companys executives and Emelia Tiffany. Scattered autographed letters were received personally by Fielding from Upton Sinclair (1918-1928), John Haynes Holmes (1938), Ralph Bunche (1955) and J.W Fulbright (1965). Letters from John D. Rockefeller (1922), Helen Keller (1928), and Barry Goldwater (1959) were acquired through his affiliation with the Tiffany concern. Other prominent correspondents/persons referenced include Helen Keller and Bertrand Russell.

Collection consists of correspondence, agreements, memoranda, minutes, commercial codes, financial statements, securities accounts, and patent and shipping papers which reflect Flint's multifarious and far-flung business activities in America, South America, Russia, and China. Included are papers relating to industrial mergers; rubber goods manufacturing on Long Island (N.Y.); the financing of the United States Rubber Company; the purchase and re-organization of the New York Times Company; the paving of the streets of Manaus, Brazil; a new submarine engine; proposals for railways between Guayaquil and Quito in Ecuador and between Alaska and Siberia; the supplying of munitions and cartridge belts to the Russian army; and the provision of loans to Russia and to China for railway development and to the Sultan of Turkey for the purchase of naval vessels. Also, correspondence of Flint as chairman of the American Committee for the Encouragement of Democratic Government in Russia. This collection documents the tireless efforts of journalist Daniel M. Williams to refine and publish a biography of the American sculptor and collector George Grey Barnard. While the project never came to fruition, the collection represents approximately 30 years of Williams's accumulated research and writings, and consists of correspondence, including some of Barnard's personal letters to his family, as well as clippings, ephemera and photographs regarding the artist's life and career as a sculptor and important collector of medieval art and architecture. Works by Barnard documented here include his celebrated commissions, such as the monumental figural group for the Pennsylvania Capitol at Harrisburg, as well as his controversial depictions of Abraham Lincoln and the god Pan. References to Barnard's excursions to the French countryside in search of artifacts include his sale to John D. Rockefeller, Jr. of more than 600 pieces, which would collectively be housed and referred to as the Cloisters, the renowned branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collection also includes Williams's working notes, numerous drafts and portions of typescript edited and annotated not only by the author, but also by the artist and his son, Monroe Barnard.

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, collected material, personal items, and memorabilia that document the activities and associations of George Sherwood Eddy throughout his career as a YMCA secretary, seminar leader, author, lecturer, and evangelist. George Sherwood Eddy was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on January 19, 1871. He earned a Ph.B. degree from Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University in 1891, attended Union Theological Seminary and graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary. Eddy worked for the YMCA, Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions, and American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He was appointed YMCA secretary for Asia in 1911. Eddy wrote and published numerous books and pamphlets from 1895-1955. He died in Jacksonville, Illinois on November 4, 1963.

Frederick Henry Osborn was an administrator, humanist, and scientist. This collection includes letters, diaries, reports, speeches, drafts of articles and books, oral history interviews, and photographs. There are diaries and letters for his service in Europe with the American Red Cross during World War I. There are some letters and documents, such as patent applications and plans for inventions, from his "business career" period prior to 1928, after which he became a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History studying anthropology and population. This study led to his later important contributions to the redirection of eugenics study in the U.S. and the reorganization of the American Eugenics Society. His other related organizational work and publications relating to human and population genetics are also documented in this collection. There is significant material (letters, diaries, reports) related to Osborn's World War II contributions as the chairman of the Civilian Committee on Selective Service in 1940, and as head of the Morale Branch of the U.S. Army (later, the Information and Education Division of Special Services) in 1941. Also included are important documents, especially his diary, from his work as deputy representative on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the U.N. Commission for Conventional Armaments. His letters, writings, and speeches relating to foreign policy are extensive, spanning the period from the 1940s until his death, much of it from the Vietnam War years. The correspondence with Kathleen Harris is particularly rich in this respect. There is family correspondence reflecting his dynamic philosophy of life, with long series of letters to his parents (1917-1945) and to his children and grandchildren. His later civic and regional interests, as a long-time resident of Garrison, N.Y., are evidenced in the work he did on the Palisades Interstate Park Commission.

The records of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment in clude: minutes of board of directors meetings, correspondence with governmental officials and business leaders, contribution, publicity, legal, and research files, financial records, and questionnaires which document the campaign to repeal the prohibition amendment. Included are copies of investigations which explored the relationship between prohibition and organized crime, alcoholism, and disease. The collection contains drafts of proposed constitutional amendments, radio addresses and magazine articles. There are also copies of questionnaires that the Association circulated in order to assess public opinion on the prohibition issue. Studies of Canadian and European state licensed liquor systems show the range of alternatives that were being explored during the late 1920s. Records describe the relationship between the Association, the liquor and hotel industry, and organized labor.

The Speer Family Papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family’s papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Title: Nettie Fowler McCormick correspondence, 1775-1939.

Papers of Nettie Fowler McCormick, a philanthropist and wife of the inventor, Cyrus Hall McCormick, including correspondence with family and friends, with company officials, and with individuals, organizations, and institutions involved in her many philanthropies. Interfiled are legal documents such as powers of attorney, indentures, and contracts; and annual statements and reports. Correspondence before her marriage consists chiefly of letters relating to her own and her husband's ancestors and friends; relatives included the Adams, Esselstyn, Fowler, Merick, and Spicer families. She corresponded regularly with her children Harold, Stanley, Virginia, and Anita and with those who cared for Stanley and Virginia after their mental breakdowns. The papers reveal Mrs. McCormick's role as her husband's aid and her eldest son's advisor. The correspondence illustrates her involvement in business as she accompanied her husband on many trips, discussed problems and wrote letters for him, and in his absence received confidential mail relating to his business and their family life. After Cyrus H. Jr., entered the company in 1879 and became president in 1884, frequent communications between son and mother discuss the business, the estate, and investments. References are made to competitors, patents, and strikes of 1885 and 1886; the unsuccessful attempt to form the American Harvester Company in 1888-1890; and problems attending consolidation when the International Harvester Company was established in 1902. Her close contact with these interests, as well as investments and philanthropies, produced correspondence with lawyers, employees, financial agents, and advisors. Mrs. McCormick received informational copies of many letters and reports from the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and the International Harvester Company long after she ceased to be closely involved. In the 1890s, Mrs. McCormick gave more attention to her interest in philanthropy, an interest that accounts for fully half of her correspondence. The McCormick Theological Seminary, originally her husband's interest, continued to receive a major share of her attention and funds. Its administrators and faculty, as well as her own pastors at Fourth Presbyterian Church, consulted with her regularly and advised her on other schools and missions. Using the need for Christian service as her personal motivation, she became greatly interested in aiding small schools and academies, particularly those stressing self help for students, manual training, and domestic service. These were chiefly white although some were African-American. Letters give evidence of the extent to which she advised them, influenced their curricula, and helped to maintain them. The extent of her personal involvement is illustrated by her many years of correspondence with Harold S. Clemons, whom she assisted through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her interest in the welfare of those in the southern Appalachians led her to aid the Home Industrial School at Asheville under Florence Stephenson ; and to give encouragement to the Laurel schools and to projects in mountain crafts, out of which grew correspondence with Frances L. Goodrich. She helped support Thornwell Orphanage in South Carolina, writing to William Plumer Jacobs; and she kept in touch with James G. K. McClure Jr., of the Farmers' Federation in North Carolina. Mrs. McCormick also received numerous requests from civic groups in the Chicago area, and responded to many. Letters concerning the Presbyterian Church, its various boards of education and missions, and its publications comprise much of the correspondence; Bible work and rescue missions were also important to her. In the last thirty years of her life, foreign mission schools claimed much of her attention; and both the personnel and the institutions were her correspondents as well as recipients of her largess. The papers also document her great interest in both the Young Men's and the Young Women's Christian Association, locally, nationally, and internationally. Through numerous letters exchanged with John R. Motte she aided the World's Student Christian Movement and the work of the International Committee of the YMCA. She corresponded also with Fletcher S. Brockman, George M. Day, Sherwood Eddy, Carlisle V. Hibbard, Richard C. Morse, and Luther D. Wishard concerning the YMCA; and with Grace Dodge and Elizabeth Wilson of the YWCA.

Personal materials consist of biographical information and correspondence with family and friends, including a few financial records and insurance policy materials. General correspondence contains three subseries: College/University Correspondence, Resignation, and Work Camps. Correspondents include Jane Addams, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Eleanor Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Augusta Savage. The College/University correspondence contains mostly incoming and outgoing letters from presidents and deans at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, with some folders on other educational institutions. The Resignation subseries includes information on Jones's tentative resignation in 1941, and his final official resignation in 1946. The Work Camp subseries includes information on the Whiteville Work Camp, in which students were engaged in assisting the residents of rural Whiteville, Tenn., in a project to build schools. Within the Board of Trustees materials are correspondence, minutes, and reports from the President and the Interim Administrative Committee (the select group of faculty who oversaw the administrative responsibilities of the University during the transition between Jones's and Charles S. Johnson's presidencies). The Faculty and Staff series consists of five subseries: Correspondence and Contracts; Faculty Committees; Departmental Reports; Executive Committee of the Faculty; and Meeting of the Faculty. The Correspondence and Contracts includes information on the backgrounds, salaries, and correspondence of faculty and staff during Jones's tenure, and correspondence between Charles S. Johnson and Jones; also documents regarding the possibility of hiring Zora Neale Hurston as a faculty member (1934). Departmental Reports consist of yearly reports of activities, budgets, and proposals. Some departments were never formally established, however the information regarding their possible conception is valuable to understanding the curriculum development at Fisk. Of significant interest is the Aeronautics program, a rare entity at most universities. The Executive Committee of the Faculty played an integral role in making key decisions for the University. This subseries consists of three sub-subseries: Correspondence; Minutes; and Sub-Committees. The third sub-subseries contains information on subcommittees and correspondence with the Executive Committee. The last subseries in the Faculty and Staff Series is the Meeting of the Faculty which contains minutes of the general body of Fisk Faculty members. The Students and Alumni series is comprised of two subseries: Students and Alumni. Both subseries contain correspondence. The Students sub-subseries contains information on student interests and committees, and on the case of Ishmael Flory, a graduate student forced to withdraw from the University for his publicized petition against the Jubilee Singers performing at a segregated venue. Support for Flory comes from national organizations such as the NAACP and other colleges and universities. The Alumni subseries features information on the Alumni Association and on various alumni who corresponded with Jones and other administrators at Fisk University. The Building Development and Properties series consists of general correspondence regarding the development of different buildings on Fisk's campus. Additionally, there are architectural bids and plans, as well as property insurance information, useful in understanding the growth of Fisk's physical plant during Jones' tenure. The Financial Records in this collection consist of five subseries: Endowments, Gifts and Grants; Foundations; General Education Board; Scholarships; and General Business Office Records. Endowments, Gifts, and Grants give extensive information on the annual endowment campaigns in which Jones aggressively solicited funds for the University. For more information on the endowment campaigns, researchers should also consult the Office of Public Relations series for correspondence of Theodore Yoder who was the contact for many of those campaigns and Director of Public Relations. Information on both prospective foundations, and those which gave money to Fisk, can be found in the Foundations subseries. The General Education Board was a large foundation which gave money consistently to Fisk University-as well as many other Black educational institutions in the South-for various projects, including curriculum development and property building. Proposed fellowships for faculty members are also found within this series, as well as correspondence regarding the ventures in which they assisted Fisk. The Scholarships in this collection document the different endowed scholarships given from estates and individual donors. Also found within this subseries is some of the Student Aid Committee information. This committee voted on which students would receive aid from the University. Lastly, the General Business Office Records subseries of the Financial Record series contains expenditures, audits, and financial reports of the University. The World War II and Military Materials document educational, training opportunities, and special programs at Fisk which played a role in the domestic front: such as the Army Specialized Training Program, (which was housed at Fisk), as well as the Civilian Public Service Camps which Jones and other conscientious objectors participated in while on leave from the University. This series contains propaganda, correspondence, and information on veteran students at Fisk. The Music series includes one subseries on the Jubilee Singers, as well as information, materials, and programs for the University Choir, the Student Quartet, and other musical guests who came to Fisk during Jones's tenure. Topics include: Roland Hayes's visits to Fisk and the Festival of Music and Fine Arts. Also includes documents regarding Marian Anderson's visit to Fisk. The Jubilee Singers information includes correspondence with various managers of the singing group. The Office of Public Relations series is comprised primarily of correspondence from the administrators of the Public Relations Dept. at Fisk, including Theodore Yoder and Eva Child. Additionally, much information on the endowment campaigns can be found within this series, as Yoder served as a director of the annual initiatives to raise money for the University. The Office of Publicity series consists of correspondence with the Director of Publicity, Luanna Bowles, and her staff. Much of the correspondence directed to Jones regarding publications, bulletins, and information on the University was referred to this office. This section also includes information on printing companies which solicited Fisk for business, and various types of media used to publicize Fisk. Organizations to which Jones belonged or those interested in Fisk University are found in the Organizational Affiliations series, which has four subseries: American Friends Service Committee; Educational Organizations; Civic, Social, and Political Organizations; and Conferences. Jones was a birthright member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). The American Friends Service Committee served as a social justice organization founded by the Quakers to support various peace programs. This series includes correspondence, engagements, and speeches made by Jones. Researchers interested in the Civilian Public Service Camps Jones participated in should consult the World War II and Military series in addition to this subseries. The Educational and Civic, Social, and Political Organizations subseries includes correspondence between groups with varied missions. Documents regarding Fisk University becoming the first Black institution of higher learning to receive a Class A rating from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools can also be found in this subseries. Lastly, the Conferences subseries includes correspondence between Jones and organizations either wishing to hold conferences on the campus or requesting the leadership of Fisk administrators in conducting them. The agenda for the first Race Relations Institute held at Fisk is also included in this subseries. The Publications series holds many university publications: the Fisk Herald, Fisk News, and the Fisk University Bulletin. The publicity office composed a biographical sketch of J.W. Johnson, also contained in this series. Additionally, other university bulletins, institutional newsletters, and newspaper clippings are included. Addresses, Manuscripts, Reports, Speeches, and Writings contain documents making up the various subseries with these names found in this section. It contains manuscripts and writings composed by Jones as well as others at Fisk and elsewhere. Additionally, there is some correspondence regarding Jones' speaking engagements. The Special Events series includes commencements, convocations, receptions, and other items relating to Jones's 1926 inauguration. The series primarily consists of correspondence and addresses, but also contains programs and news releases. The Interim Administrative Committee series contains the correspondence and minutes of the group of faculty members who oversaw the administrative responsibilities of the University after Jones resigned in 1946 until Charles S. Johnson officially assumed the presidency in 1947. The Miscellaneous Materials make up the final series and include Fisk Related and Non-Fisk Related Materials, such as unknown or undated mailing lists, notes, and a biography of Herbert Hoover. Of note in this series is the amendment to the Charter, the Articles of Incorporation, and the By-laws of Fisk University.

Also includes numerous Tuck family scrapbooks with correspondence, photographs, and printed ephemera of the Tuck and French families. Many of the letters are annotated by Amos Tuck French and discuss topics such as family, business, charitable giving, and the Tuck home Château Vert-Mont in Rueil-Malmaison, France. In addition two family photo albums contain images of Château Vert-Mont, transatlantic steamer crossings, and family portraits.
