Lets Markham know that he will be going to Washington to see the President and to take care of some magazine matters; saw the voucher for the March "Eyrie" and will issue a check shortly; goes on to say that it's not an easy matter to induce Pierpont Morgan and John D, . Rockefeller who control our bread and butter.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899).
