Tulane, 1903; Washington and Lee, 1904; Williams, 1907); he instigated principles of civil service reform in New York State; became a member of Brooklyn Civil Service Commission; admitted to the bar, 1871; successful corporate lawyer; wealth from railroads in Mexico and Southwest; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for mayor of greater New York 1901; author of biography of Martin Van Buren (American statesmen series) and Memoirs of Dugdale; died 1911 at his Lake George summer home.
