William Livingston (November 30, 1723 – July 25, 1790) was an American politician who served as the first non-Colonial governor of New Jersey (1776–1790) during the American Revolutionary War. As a New Jersey representative in the Continental Congress, he signed the Continental Association and the United States Constitution. He is considered one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
Born in Albany, New York, Livingston received his early education from local schools and tutors. At age 13, Livingston was sent to live for a year and prepare for college with the Anglican missionary catechist and Yale College graduate Henry Barclay who lived among the Iroquois in the Mohawk Valley at Fort Hunter. Livingston enrolled at Yale in 1737 and graduated in 1741. He went on to New York City, where he studied law and became a law clerk. He became a lawyer in 1748 and began his practice in New York City. In 1752, he co-founded a weekly journal, the Independent Reflector. Livingston was a member of the New York provincial assembly from 1759 to 1761.
In 1772, he moved to Elizabethtown (today Elizabeth, New Jersey). After attaining considerable influence amongst the local patriots, Livingston was elected to serve as one of New Jersey's delegates to the Continental Congress. He served from July 1774 to June 1776. The state's Provincial Congress declined to reappoint him to the Continental Congress as he did not favor independence. Instead, they offered him command of the state's militia, an offer he declined. He returned to New Jersey and relied on his previous commission (of October 1775) as a brigadier general of the New Jersey Militia. In August 1776, he was elected Governor of New Jersey. Livingston joined the New Jersey Delegation to the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and was one of the signers of the U.S. Constitution. He was appointed United States Minister to the Netherlands in 1788 by U.S. Congress but turned down the proposition. He continued to be reelected governor of New Jersey each year until his death in 1790.
Livingston died in Elizabeth. Originally buried at Trinity Church, Manhattan, his remains were reinterred at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn in 1844.

Greene, Nathanael, 1742-1786. Papers, 1777-1780
Title:
Nathanael Greene Papers 1777-1780
Nathanael Greene was one of the leading commanders in the Continental Army, and the only officer George Washington saw as capable of leading in his absence. Greene served as a field commander, member of Washington's staff, Quartermaster General, and commander of the Army in the Southern Theater. Greene was born on July 27, 1742 in Potowomut, Rhode Island to a Quaker family, who believed that their children would learn more from manual labor then from attending school. Lacking a formal education Greene was very intelligent and taught himself to read, developing early on a love of books - particularly military history and theory. It was through reading, not experience, where Greene learned his knowledge of military science. Between 1778 and 1780 he reluctantly served as Quartermaster General, and was able to drastically improve supplying the Continental Army. Greene ended his military career leading the American Southern army to victory over the British. Greene died in Georgia in June 1786. The Papers of Nathanael Greene come from Greene's tenure as Quartermaster General of the Continental Army between 1778 and 1780. The collection primarily consists of Greene's correspondence with officers in the quartermaster department, officers in the Army (including George Washington), and members of the Continental Congress; relating to the operation of the Quartermaster Department with requests for supplies, forage, and money. In addition, there is also correspondence between officers of the Quartermaster Department. The content of the letters provide a detailed account of the logistical obstacles that Greene and his subordinates faced in trying to keep not only the Quartermaster Department but the Continental Army running. The papers do not contain any material relating to Greene's military service or private life either before or after his tenure as quartermaster general.

Morse family. Morse family papers, 1779-1868 (inclusive).
Title:
Morse family papers, 1779-1868 (inclusive).
The principal figures in this collection are Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826) and his sons Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872) and Richard Cary Morse (1795-1868). More than half of the collection is made up of correspondence (1779-1868) among members of the family. Also included are legal and financial papers, sermons by Jedidiah and Richard Cary Morse, travel journals, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, printed matter, and photographs. Jedidiah Morse's missionary work among the Indians and his concern for their condition is reflected in a number of letters on the subject. Samuel F. B. Morse, who had a double career as a painter and as the inventor of the telegraph, is represented by correspondence, depositions on his invention, and three drawings by a student (dated 1862). Richard Cary Morse's papers contain a biography of Jedidiah Morse and extensive journals on travels to the Bay of Fundy in 1822; to Europe in 1837-1838 in search of a cure for his depression; and again to Europe in 1855. One of the entries in his journal of 1837-1838 is his account of the coronation procession of Queen Victoria. Correspondence with his wife, Sarah Louise, between 1838 and 1850 conveys a vivid picture of family life and many details on the sickness of children.

Lewis, Joseph, 1748-1814. Joseph Lewis diary, 1806, [ca. 1900].
Title:
Joseph Lewis diary, 1806, [ca. 1900].
This collection contains a transcript of the diary of Joseph Lewis, a Morris County, New Jersey lawyer, and covers the years 1783 to 1795. The diary is bound in one volume, and is 239 pages in length. Editorial corrections are handwritten in ink. Apparently, Edmund D. Halsey transcribed the diary from the original around the year 1900. The volume contains an index which precedes the text of the diary. The entries, for the most part, are made on a daily basis; Lewis reports facts such as the weather for the day, and of events occurring in his community. However, the bulk of the text is devoted to the recording of his daily activities in relation to his law practice in Morris County. The majority of his cases involved the resolution of property disputes and settlement of disagreements over financial obligations. Clients and colleagues mentioned in his diary include Elias Boudinot (1745-1821), Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853), Benjamin Halsey (1764-1853), William Livingston (1723-1790), Robert Morris (ca. 1745-1815), Moses Tuttle (1732-1819), and others.precedes the text of the diary.
