Emiliano Zapata (b. 8 August 1879, Morelos, Mexico–d. 10 April 1919, Morelos, Mexico) was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, the main leader of the peasant revolution in the state of Morelos, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo. He was born in the rural village of Anenecuilco (Morelos State), where peasant communities were under increasing pressure from the small landowning class who monopolized land and water resources for sugar cane production with the support of dictator Porfirio Díaz. He participated in political movements against Diaz and the landowning hacendados, when the Revolution broke out in 1910 he was positioned as a central leader of the peasant revolt in Morelos. He then formed and led the Liberation Army of the South; Zapata's forces contributed to the fall of Díaz, defeating the Federal Army in the Battle of Cuautla, but when the revolutionary leader Francisco I.
When Madero became president, he disavowed the role of the Zapatistas, denouncing them as simple bandits. In November 1911, Zapata promulgated the Plan de Ayala which called for substantial land reforms and Madero sent the Federal Army to root out the Zapatistas in Morelos but this only strenghthed the Zapata's role.
During the Mexican Revoltion, Venustiano Carranza, Álvaro Obregón, and Pancho Villa ousted Victoriano Huerta who took power of Mexico. Afterwards, Zapata and Pancho Villa broke with Carranza, promting civil war; Zapata then focused his energies on rebuilding society in Morelos which he now controlled. In 1915, Zapata initiated guerrilla warfare against the Carrancistas, who in turn invaded Morelos, Zapata retook Morelos in 1917 and held most of the state against Carranza's troops until he was killed in an ambush in April 1919; remains an iconic figure in Mexico, used both as a nationalist symbol as well as a symbol of the neo-Zapatista movement.

Concerning the film Viva Zapata!, noting that Zapata has "been a dream of mine since 1920, probably before you were born." Noting that while he is not familiar with the script, he knows that Steinbeck worked on it and that he would appreciate it if there was a possibility of Tobias acting in it. Listing the Zapata-related places he has visited in Mexico, and saying he would like to travel there again with Kazan, regardless of whether he acts in the film or not.

Saying how delighted he is with the script for Viva Zapata! and promising to send his suggestions "Gadg" (i.e., Kazan) that day. Remarking that he does not think it should be published before the release of the film because critics will "make up their minds exactly what the picture should look like and if it does not look exactly like their own visualization of it then they do not judge it fairly," but noting that he has no objection to a scenario being published after the release of the film.

Responding in detail to his letter (MA 3659.60). Noting that it is not their intention to produce a historical drama, but to use the historical character to "highlight and perhaps explain the problems of the present day." Disagreeing with his suggestion that the actors speak with Mexican accents and discussing the possibility of using a Corrida singer as the narrator, suggesting that the film could be framed around Silva (a Corrida singer who rode with Zapata). Agreeing with most of his points and asking for further suggestions on how to cut the script.

Outlining Mexican history through the revolution to 1919 and describing in detail the people and customs of the state of Morelos. Discussing the type of screenplay he would like to write about Emiliano Zapata, noting "I should like to make him a real and living man, and to have his relationships warm; but at the same time, I should like to lift him above the real and the exact, since that is the way hie is considered in his own country now." Recommending that the film be shot on location in Mexico, discussing the difficulties that American production companies have when producing films in Mexico, and suggesting Oscar Danziger (i.e., Dancigers) as a "Front-production man." Remarking that "Kazan and I see eye to eye on this picture" and stating that the only actor who could play Zapata "with veracity and integrity and beliveableness" is Pedro Armindades (i.e., Armendáriz).

Apologizing for the length of time it took him to read Viva Zapata! Remarking that the screenplay is a starting point: praising the fine scenes and Steinbeck's treatment of Zapata's personal life and remarking on some of the problems, agreeing with Steinbeck that Zapata "is just so good that no inner conflict existed." Relaying Zanuck's suggestion that the film focus on just one element of Zapata's life and suggesting that they meet before Kazan travels to Europe. Remarking that he does not want to rush any work on the script because "it's too big and too good."

Title:
Genaro García broadsides and circulars collection, 1772-1926.
Broadsides and printed circulars aquired by Genaro García from the 18th-20th centuries. The materials are arranged by size in six groups, starting with the smallest items. Within each size classification, items are arranged chronologically. Materials relate primarily to the history and politics in Mexico, particularly the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920). Inquiring specifically after Zapata's sister, who is said to be a tortilla vendor in the market at Cuernavaca. Also asking for information from the Government or Army records on plots to assassinate Zapata. Asking him to give the following confidential information to Kazan so he can study it before they speak on the telephone the following day. Discussing the political ramifications of their work on Zapata; noting that everyone with whom Kazan has worked so far "are definitely either communists or leftwingers" and that they do not want to jeopardize their positions in Mexico by associating themselves with the project unless it is definitely pro-left or pro-communistic. Referencing a similar situation that he experienced in France two years before and noting that while it is clear that the cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa would like to work on the project, he "has deeper responsibilities and is afraid to be associated with it unless it goes 100 percent to the left." Suggesting that they first finalize the script and then distribute it widely to the Mexican authorities.

Remarking that the impending release of the film Viva Zapata! has been brought to the attention of his department. Remarking that three actors in the film have "records of affiliation with organizations deemed as subversive or communistic" and that all of the books they have obtained on Zapata depict him as a "brutal and ruthless General" glorified by the Mexican Communist Party in America. Typed letter signed : Beverly Hills, Calif., to John [Steinbeck], 1949 May 18.
Discussing his intention to begin working on the screenplay for Viva Zapata! Noting that he does not want to rush his work because the script is so big and cohesive that he needs "time to turn it around on all sides like you do with a mountain nd see which side is the best for an approach" and hoping that this will work for Zanuck, who usually works very quickly. Referencing his upcoming trip to Europe, and asking to meet with Steinbeck at the beginning of August once he returns.

Noting that he has met with "Gadge" (i.e., Kazan) following the receipt of Zanuck's wires, and outlining the results of their discussions. Noting that: 1. the Mexican church should not be consulted for permission to make the film; 2. the Minister of Communications oversees censorship in Mexico, and that while they should not have any censorship issues he will probably have to be "paid off;" 3. who to contact to obtain permission to use the facilities of the Mexican government; 4. that opposition of the film is most likely to come from the Mexican film industry itself, especially with the recent memory of the film Viva Villa; 5. that Kazan would like to test Pedro Armendarrez for the part of Pete; and 6. that Gabriel Figuerrola is both the best cameraman and probably the most powerful man in the Mexican film industry, and suggesting that he be approached to possibly work on the film. Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Typed copy of a letter : Beverly Hills, Calif., to John Steinbeck, 1948 June 21.
Expressing his excitement at hearing that Steinbeck will begin work on [Viva Zapata!] right away; discussing his own involvement in the film, remarking that he would like to "keep out of the way of the story" until an outline or first draft has been completed; describing his role in Gentleman's Agreement to illustrate this suggestion. Remarking that he has several version of Zapata's life and feels that he has a good understanding of the subject. Noting that Twentieth Century-Fox wants to produce a "fine picture but [also] a popular one," and referencing the films Juarez and Viva Villa to illustrate his meaning.

Title:
ASARO graphics collection [graphic]. 2006-2009.
Series of original prints (woodcuts, lithographs and serigraphs) advocating human rights, social justice and other causes as they pertain to various contemporary events and situations in Mexico -- e.g. unjust treatment of illegal Mexican immigrants in the U.S.; the violent government repression of the APPO strike in Oaxaca in 2006; the serial murders of women in Ciudad Juárez; genetically modified corn; U.S. exploitation of Mexico's oil resources; and Mexican political prisoners. Another series features contemporary revisions of the image of Emiliano Zapata. Also includes miscellaneous prints issued by ASARO depicting Benito Juarez and other subject matter; and lower quality ephemeral posters used to promote various events, many of them affiliated with ASARO's exhibition center Espacio Zapata. Throughout the collection, images include visual references to police states (e.g. swastikas of Nazi Germany), imperialism, fascism, capitalism, socialism, revolution, and Mexico's agrarian culture, among other themes. Many images also bear the traditional Mexican motif of the skeleton ("calaveras"). One folder (--PIC) includes self-published booklet: ASARO a 2 años; and a dvd copy of documentary film on ASARO: El Muro.
ArchivalResource: 15 oversize folders (104 prints) and 1 folder (1 booklet and 1 dvd) : color ; 100 x 70 cm or smaller.

Carbon copy of a typed letter : [Beverly Hills, Calif.],to John J. Coughlin, 1952 Jan. 24.
Defending the film Viva Zapata! and the character of Emiliano Zapata. Noting that "the idea of Zapata being a Communist is simply fantastic," remarking that he was assassinated "before there was such a thing as a functioning Communist Party anywhere int he world" and that he rode into battle flanked by Catholic priests. Remarking that none of the cast has ever been "branded as Red" by the Un-American Activities Council or by the FBI and noting that communists "will hate the film because it makes a strong plea for the principles of Democracy."
