Peterborough (Hillsborough Co.), N.H. poet.
Robinson was an American poet.
American poet.
Edwin Arlington Robinson was an American poet and an acquaintance of the Richards family from Gardiner, Maine.
Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) was an American poet. He lived in New York City and also worked at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
Poet.
E.A. Robinson was a popular, productive poet remembered chiefly for a few short works. Poetry was his only real interest, although for a time he struggled to make a career of it. Once established, he prolifically produced long, complex, precisely crafted poems grounded in poetical tradition. During a time when his contemporaries were experimenting with poetic forms, Robinson's work often seemed anachronistic, but he remains one of America's favorite poets.
Robinson was an American poet of the early twentieth century.
Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) was an American poet.
He lived in New York City and also worked at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
Edwin Arlington Robinson was born on December 22, 1869 in Head Tide, Maine. His early years as a young adult proved difficult and were marked by tragedy. His brother Dean died of a drug overdose in 1899 and his brother Herman died in 1909, leaving the family fortune in shambles. Robinson was considered unmotivated and unlikely to make anything of himself, and even though he was accepted into Harvard in 1891, he was forced to leave his studies unfinished in 1893 due to the family's financial difficulties. He spent many of the ensuing years employed in various odd jobs.
In 1911, Robinson began spending his summers at an artists' colony in New Hampshire, where he found more time and inspiration to devote to his poetry. In 1922 he won his first Pulitzer Prize for his Collected Poems, earned a second in 1924, and won a third in 1927. Robinson continued to published regularly right up until the end of his life, and is now recognized as a highly regarded American poet of the 20th century. He died on April 6, 1935.

Bourne, Randolph Silliman, 1886-1918. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1911-1919.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1911-1919.
Randolph Silliman Bourne and Carl Zigrosser were friends at Columbia, summered together in the country, and shared an apartment in New York after their graduation. A falling-out between the two ended the touching closeness displayed in this correspondence. Bourne's letters reflect their shared interests and are a restless and eager record of 4 years of their lives. Topics covered include music, social evenings, nature and hiking, college politics at the Columbia Monthly, evening speakers at Columbia, art and the philosophy of color, Edward Murray, Rockwell Kent, Joyce Kilmer, Woodrow Wilson, possible articles for publication, college gossip about mutual friends, Frederick Keppel and Bernard Shaw. Many of the letters were written during Bourne's year in Europe (1913-1914). Besidesdescribing the countryside and characterizing nations Bourne writes about town planning and social welfare, a lecture by G.K. Chesterton, social movements in England, Sylvia Pankhurst, Havelock Ellis, Walt Whitman, women that he meets and his reaction to them, impressions of Paris over London, and the 1914 General Strike in Italy. There are few letters after his return to the United States (a time when he and Zigrosser lived together and then parted company), most are written from Dublin, N.H. and tell of meeting William Merritt Chase and Edwin Arlington Robinson at Amy Lowell's and life in that intellectual circle. This correspondence also contains a brief and biting note by Carl Zigrosser describing Bourne's funeral, and a folder containing published works by Bourne and appreciations written upon his death.

Title:
History of Indiana University, 1968-1981
This project is a compilation of interviews of subjects with strong ties to and memories of Indiana University, primarily at the Bloomington campus. The interviewees include former students, faculty, and staff, among others. The information contained in the interviews generally spans a little more than the first half of the twentieth century and often deals with the administrations under presidents William Lowe Bryan and Herman B Wells. The project is a survey of Indiana University's history as a whole including information about various academic departments, athletics, student organizations, campus growth, university development, living conditions, segregation and the treatment of African-Americans, the administration, and the importance of jazz at Indiana University. In addition, the impact of specific events, such as the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and water shortages, is detailed in many of the interviews in this project.

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Bynner, Witter, 1881-1968,. Letters : from various correspondents, 1900-1958.
Title:
Letters : from various correspondents, 1900-1958.
Chiefly letters to Bynner from literary friends and associates such as Mary Austin, Minnie Maddern Fiske, Robert Frost, Kahlil Gibran, Vachel Lindsay, Amy Lowell, William Sydney Porter (O. Henry), E.A. Robinson, Carl Sandburg, Sara Teasdale, and many others, on American literary criticism. Mary Austin's letters compliment Bynner's works and contain critical interpretations of their peer's works. The correspondence from Willa Cather divulges information about her youth as the starting point for her knowledge of western life. Frost's letters are personal in nature and inquire about family life while reminiscing on past encounters. Many letters from Laurence Housman discuss his own works, particularly the creation of his brother's (A.E. Housman) Memoirs. Laurence often discusses American politics, particulary the Second World War. Amy Lowell's letters discuss Bynner's reviews in The New Republic.

Hagedorn writes to "Miss Lyon" on a statement in Hagedorn's biography on Edwin Arlington Robinson as to whether Robinson read his own poems or not. Hagedorn apparently had stated that Robinson did read his own poems, while a published letter of Robinson's to Mrs. Mabel Dodge said he did not.

E.A. Robinson letter to E.C. Stedman, 1902 Nov. 10.
The collection consists of a handwritten letter to E.C. Stedman, 10 Nov. 1902, removed from a copy of Robinson's book of poems, Captain Craig. The letter expresses gratitude at Stedman's reassurance, presumably in relation to Robinson's verse and Captain Craig in particular. Critical reaction to the poems in Captain Craig was fair, but the title poem was considered unecessarily long and complex, so Stedman's comments were timely and valued.

The collection consists mainly of his professional papers, including correspondence with colleagues and literary figures, articles written by others at his request for the Jay B. Hubbell Center, printed materials inscribed to him and written by him, and unpublished manuscripts. The material chronicles the four decades of Hubbell's career as professor and critic, which he dedicated to the growth and development of American literature as a field of critical inquiry. Among the many significant correspondents or subjects of others' writings are Conrad Aiken, Gay Wilson Allen, Robert Frost, Clarence Gohdes, members of the Hubbell family, Ralph Leslie Rusk, Carl Sandburg, Allen Tate, Arlin Turner, and John Hall Wheelock. Other significant topics covered by the material include the founding of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for American Literary Historiography at Duke University, the study and teaching of literature from the American South, the activities of the faculty at Duke University, and the development of the American Literature Section of the Modern Language Association (MLA).
