Hart, Moss, 1904-1961. Moss Hart and Kitty Carlisle papers, 1922-1962, 1988.
Title:
Moss Hart and Kitty Carlisle papers, 1922-1962, 1988.
Papers of Moss Hart (1904-1961) and Kitty Carlisle (1910-2007), a noted playwright-director and his wife, an actress and television personality. Manuscript and published copies of Hart's major works, some of which were written in collaboration with George S. Kaufman and Irving Berlin, include the plays "The American Way" (1939), "Christopher Blake" (1946), "The Climate of Eden" (1952), "George Washington Slept Here" (1940), "Jubilee" (1935), "Lady in the Dark" (1941), "Light Up the Sky" (1948), "The Man Who Came to Dinner" (1939), "Merrily We Roll Along" (1934), "Once in a Lifetime" (1930), "You Can't Take It With You" (1936), and "Winged Victory" (1943); the motion pictures "The Eddie Duchin Story" (Col., 1954), "Gentleman's Agreement" (20th Century-Fox, 1947), and "A Star is Born" (Warner Bros., 1954); and his autobiography "Act One" (1959). There is also a script for "My Fair Lady" (1956), which Hart directed on Broadway. For several of the above titles there are also notes, business records, clippings, and photographs. Of more personal interest are two diaries, the first kept by Hart during a world trip in 1935 while he wrote "Jubilee," and the second a journal of his theatrical activities and personal life during 1953 and 1954. Related to Kitty Carlisle's stage and screen career are clipping scrapbooks, 1932-1946 (on microfilm), photographs, and a draft version of her autobiography "Kitty" (1988). On film are the Harts' appearances at the 1961 Academy Award ceremonies and on "Person to Person" (CBS) in 1959. The tape recordings concern a 1960 discussion of Broadway musicals between Hart and Brooks Atkinson.

ARTHUR LITHGOW PAPERS
Title:
ARTHUR LITHGOW PAPERS
The bulk of the material documents Lithgow's directorships of various theatre companies in Ohio and constitute what he himself termed a "melange" of Shakespeare Festivals in Ohio. Included are archival materials from the Antioch Shakespeare Festivals, the Toledo Zoo Amphitheatre, the Stan Hywet Shakespeare Festivals, and the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival. Non-Ohio theatre work is also well-represented with materials documenting productions at Princeton, Brattleboro Center, Provincetown Playhouse, and the University of South Florida among others. This collection will be a valuable resource to scholars pursuing research on Ohio theatre and Shakespearian theatre in America. It complements the department's vast holdings in 20th century theater. The collection would also be of value to film historians interested in the career of John Lithgow, the actor. John is the son of Arthur and Sarah Lithgow, and began his acting career in Akron at the Stan Hywet Shakespeare Festival. Of particular note is correspondence with New York critic Brooks Atkinson, playwright Arthur Miller and greetings sent to Lithgow from the Queen of England.

Tennessee Williams Collection, 1880-1993 (bulk 1930s-1970s).
Typescript, composite and holograph manuscripts, correspondence, bibliographies, clippings, scrapbooks, academic papers, business records, galley proofs, photographs, and artworks document Tennessee Williams' life, work, family, and friends from 1880-1993. Materials dated after Williams' death in 1983 are largely biographical or concern productions of his works. Correspondence includes both personal and business letters with a large portion consisting of carbon copies of letters from Williams' agent, Audrey Wood. Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Title:
Hallie Flanagan papers 1923-1963
The Hallie Flanagan papers span the years 1923-1963 and reflect many aspects of her career: teaching and directing, writing and speech-giving, and her leadership of the Federal Theatre Project. Correspondence makes up a large part of the collection and has been arranged in three series: general correspondence, Federal Theatre prject, and Vassar/Smith correspondence. Other correspondence can be found in the files on the closing of the Federal Theatre Project. The strength of the collection lies in the materials on the Federal Theatre Project and her college theater materials. The files on the Federal Theatre touch on almost every aspect of the project from beginning to end through memos, reports, production files, correspondence, speeches, articles, scripts and scrapbooks. The Vassar and Smith materials consist of notes used for her classes, articles and speeches, production files, photographs, clippings and correspondence.

Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder papers
Title:
Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder papers
The Richard Barr-Clinton Wilder Papers contain a great deal of documentation on the working aspects of the collaboration between Barr, Wilder and Edward Albee whose various producing units helped to establish a number of imporant American playwrights in the 1960s. In addition they document the work that Barr did with Charles Woodward, Jr. after Wilder left the Playwrights Unit as well as the work done by Barr and Wilder before they formed their partnership. The Administrative Files and Production series contain correspondence; production files, such as contracts, agreements, cast and crew lists, inventories, schedules, costume plots, and lighting plots; some scripts; programs; legal papers; business papers and clippings. The bulk of the documents, however, are financial records including royalty statements, box office statements, ledgers, bank statements, invoices and receipts. The more personal papers in the collection including writings, photographs and ephemera document Richard Barr's life and work. There are no similar items documenting the life of Clinton Wilder. The scrapbooks doument the work of the Playwrights Unit, mostly through clippings; they appear to have been put together by Barr.
