JOHN METCALFE POLK (1875-1904), younger son of William Mecklenburg Polk, M.D., LL.D., Dean of Cornell University Medical College, and Ida (Lyon) Polk, and grandson of the Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk, D.D., LL.D., first Bishop of Louisiana, and one of the founders of the University of the South, was born at Demopolis, Ala., on May 6, 1875. While in the Sheffield Scientific School he was Vice-President of the University Club, and a member of the Class Committee at graduation.
After graduation he took a course in the Cornell University. Medical School, in New York City, receiving the degree of M.D. in 1899. He then entered Bellevue Hospital as interne on the Medical Side and served two years. He spent 1902 mainly in Vienna, studying pathology and medical diagnosis. In January, 1903, he entered upon his duties as Instructor in Medicine and Physical Diagnosis in Cornell Medical College. In this connection, he was appointed Adjunct Assistant Visiting Physician to Bellevue Hospital.
While studying in Europe, Dr. Polk became specially interested in the blood changes produced by infectious diseases, particularly influenza, and the pneumonias associated with influenza. Continuing his studies in this direction, he had succeeded, at the time of his death, in making observations of much value, his paper upon the subject being included in the original articles published annually by the Pathological Department of the Medical School. He had already shown himself to be an instructor of great efficiency.
While making an autopsy he became chilled, acute pneumonia developed in a few hours, and from this he died, on March 29, 1904, in the 29th year of his age.

Title:
Map of the field of battle, Murfreesboro, Tenn., [1863].
Map, 1863, of troop positions during the battle of Murfreesboro in Tenn. Stating a scale of 1"= 1 mile, it covers an area extending from the community of Lavergoe southeast to Murfreesboro. The map notes the general positions of the Union troops when the fighting began; the first night of the battle, which the map identifies as the positions on Wednesday night; and the last day of fighting, identified as Friday positions. The map presents more detail on Confederate troops positions, than the Union troops. It shows Confederate forces at the same times as the Union forces, however, the different divisions are identified by the names of their commanders. Confederate commanders identified on the map include Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge, Lt. Gen. Leonidas Polk, Lt. Gen. William J. Hardee, and Brig. Gen. Joseph Wheeler. To help distinguish between the opposing forces, the Confederate positions are depicted in red ink, while the Union positions are depicted in a faded black ink. The map also depicts different landmarks in the area, such as communities, turnpikes, dirt roads, the railroad, waterways, and a few residences. Landmarks on the map include the communities of Jefferson, Salem, and Stewartsboro; the Lebanon, Nashville, Eaglesville, and Versailles turnpikes; and Stone's River.

Contains the following types of materials: general and special orders orderly book. Contains information pertaining to the following war and time period: Civil War -- Western Theater. Contains information pertaining to the following military unit and organization: 1st Division; Western Department. General description of the collection: The Confederate Army Western Department, First Division papers include an photocopies of an album of various general and special orders issued at the headquarters, Major General Leonidas Polk commanding, September 14, 1861-Febrary 3, 1862. Endorsements suggest that many of these orders were sent to elements of the Third Divison of Polk's command, Brigadier General John P. McCown commanding: especially to its First Brigade and to Bankhead's Light Artillery Battalion. McCown apparently brought this volume with him from Columbus, Kentucky to New Madrid, Missouri in 1862. There it was picked up by Wisconsin troops of the Army of the Mississippi and was turned over to the federal government by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, November 21, 1906. Sometime while it was in Madison, someone posted in it a newspaper clipping dealing with the murder or former Confederate acting Brigadier General Smith P. Bankhead, April 27, 1867.

Meriwether Jefferson Thompson letters, 1861-1862.
Five letters from General M. J. Thompson of the Missouri State Guard at New Madrid, the earliest of which is dated Nov. 13, 1861, and is addressed to Brigadier General Gideon J. Pillow, mainly reporting the status and location of Thompson's troops. Two letters, both dated Nov. 16, 1861, are addressed to Gen. Pillow and Major General Leonidas Polk. The first is about a proposed expedition to delay navigation on the [Mississippi] River in order to provide time for Pillow's movements; the second letter of this date mainly relates to requisitions to the Quartermaster and Commissary and the enlistment of Thompson's men for Confederate service. A letter of Nov. 17, 1861 to Gen. Polk concerns the expedition to "stop navigation for a week." A letter dated Jan. 2, 1862 to Polk concerns the swearing in of recruits for Confederate service.
