Hall, Charles Bryan, 1840-
Variant namesHenry Watkins Allen, a Mississippi attorney and Louisiana planter, was elected to both the Mississippi State Legislature (1842) and the Louisiana State Legislature (1854). Before being elected governor of Louisiana (1864-1865), he was a Confederate general. In 1865 he moved to Mexico City. Allen wrote letters and articles under the pseudonym Guy Mannering.

Engraver Charles B. Hall was born in London and moved to New York with his family as a child. He served in the 71st New York Militia Infantry and the 95th New York Infantry. After the Civil War, he illustrated and compiled portraits of Confederate generals, publishing the collection in 1898 under the title Military Records of General Officers of the Confederate States of America.

First bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Louisiana, Leonidas Polk operated Leighton Plantation near Thibodaux, La. He rose to the rank of lieutenant general in the Confederate army during the Civil War. He led a corps of the Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg and commanded the Army of Mississippi and the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. Polk was killed in action at Pine Mountain, Ga.
