Bishop Polk Benevolent Society account book, 1862-1868.

Account book of charitable organizations at Trinity Church, New Orleans, La. Entries (1862) contain the names of the officers of the "Ladies Society for the Promotion of Christian Objects," subscriptions collected, and donations made to needy individuals. Later entries (1865-1868) record expenditures and receipts of the Bishop Polk Benevolent Society. Receipts show amounts collected for subscriptions, donations, and fines; the disbursements list benefits payments made for the care and feeding of infants and children. Letters are contained in the account book and express appreciation for help received from the Society.

The Bishop Polk Benevolent Society was a charitable organization associated with Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans, La. It was named in honor of Leonidas Polk, Bishop of Louisiana, who became rector in 1855 and served for five years. In 1864, Polk died in battle as he fought in the Confederate Army.
