St. Matthew's Episcopal Church was chartered in 1855 in Houma, La. with Rev. Moses E. Wilson elected as its first rector. The church building was constructed in 1858 on land donated by Robert R. Barrow and consecrated in June of that year. In 1970, the church organized and incorporated St. Matthew's Episcopal School, and created its well-known Children's Choir in 1975.
