A native of Virginia, Meriwether Jefferson Thompson moved to Missouri in 1847. An ardent secessionist, he was elected brigadier general of the 1st Division of the Missouri State Guard in July 1861. During his battalion's operations in the swampy regions of Missouri Thompson became known as the "Swamp Fox of the Confederacy." Alpheus Baker was born in 1825 in Abbeville, S.C., and became a teacher. In 1848 he settled in Glenville (Ala.) and began studying law, was admitted to the bar in 1849, and practiced in Eufaula (Ala.). He served in the Confederate Army as the Captain of the "Eufaula Rifles" in the 1st Alabama.
