Geologist and college president, of Amherst, Mass.
American geologist; president of Amherst College.
Edward Hitchcock was an eminent 19th-century scientist, minister and educator; principal of Deerfield Academy and Congregational minister in Conway, Mass.; variously professor of Chemistry, Natural History, Natural Theology and Geology at Amherst College, 1826-1864, and third president, 1845-1854. Appointed State Geologist of Massachusetts, 1830; Geologist of the first district of New York, 1836; and Geologist of Vermont, 1857. Orra White Hitchcock, whom he married in 1821, was a scholar and artist who accompanied her husband on many of his scientific expeditions and illustrated much of his work. Six children: Mary, Edward (AC 1849), Catharine Hitchcock Storrs, Jane Hitchcock Putnam, Charles (AC 1856), and Emily Hitchcock Terry.
Parker Cleaveland worked as a mineralogist and geologist.
Orra White Hitchcock, wife of geologist and Amherst College president Edward Hitchcock, whom she married in 1821, was a scholar and artist who accompanied her husband on many of his scientific expeditions and illustrated much of his work. They had six children: Mary, Edward (AC 1849), Catharine Hitchcock Storrs, Jane Hitchcock Putnam, Charles (AC 1856), and Emily Hitchcock Terry.

Century Company records
Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Administrative correspondence of the Gray Herbarium and Harvard University Herbaria, 1890-2019, bulk 1890-1955
The collection consists of Gray Herbarium correspondence from the 1890s to present day but the bulk of the letters are from 1890-1955. Most of the letters are addressed to staff members of the Gray Herbarium and were transferred to the archives from office files. Some letters were gifts to the Gray Herbarium that were interfiled into the collection.

Samuel George Morton Papers 1819-1850
Through his craniometic studies of human races, the Philadelphia physician Samuel George Morton (1799-1851) exerted a profound influence on the development of physical anthropology in antebellum America, and made substantial contributions to mineralogy, paleontology, and natural history. Relating primarily to Morton's scientific interests, the Morton Papers include insights into Morton's perspectives on education, medical practice, geology and mineralogy, craniology, paleontology, the Wilkes Exploring Expedition (also known as the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842), and his two major monographs, the and . Several of the letters were written by Morton in his capacity as corresponding secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Also included in this collection are Morton's "Some Remarks on the Infrequency of Mixed Offspring Between the European and Australian Races" (1850), Joseph Barclay Pentland's notes on the aborigines of Peru (ca. 1840?), and newspaper clippings on Morton's death; a diary of Morton's trip to the West Indies, 1834, a set of craniological sketches for use in Crania Americana, and a microfilm of letters in private hands, written to Morton, 1838-1844 Crania Americana Crania Aegyptiaca

As part of a survey of the Commonwealth commissioned by the governor in 1830 in order to prepare an accurate map of Massachusetts, a geological examination of the state was conducted and a list of mineral, botanical, and zoological specimens of the state compiled. Two surveys were carried out by Edward Hitchcock of Amherst College, in 1830-1832 and in 1837-1840. This series contains correspondence between Hitchcock and the governors from both surveys.

Edward and Orra White Hitchcock Papers
The Edward and Orra White Hitchcock Papers contain correspondence, drawings, legal documents, sermons, drafts of published and unpublished works, printed articles, autographs, artwork, and images relating to the professional activities and some of the personal life of Edward Hitchcock, Orra White Hitchcock, and their family. The material spans the years 1804-1910, with the bulk of the material falling into the period 1820-1864. Edward Hitchcock's work as a minister and nationally noted geologist is well documented in the papers. Orra White Hitchcock is less thoroughly represented. The collection contains the diaries she kept when she accompanied her husband on their European trips, along with her ad hoc sketches.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.
