Thurlow Weed, politician and journalist, was born in Cairo, N.Y., on 15 November 1797. He married Catherine Ostrander in 1818. Weed was a leader of the anti-Masonic movement of the 1820's and 30's, a New York assemblyman from 1829-1831, and a key member of the Whig Party and then the Republican Party. From 1824-1826 Weed was the owner and editor of Rochester Telegraph. He published Anti-Masonic Enquirer, and from 1829-1863 he worked as a reporter and editor for the anti-Masons' paper, Albany Evening Journal. In 1867 he once again turned to journalism as the editor of the Commercial Advertiser, which he soon left due to his failing health. Weed continued to voice his political opinions as a frequent contributor to the press and as an advisor to many politicians. He died on 22 November 1884.
Francis ("Frank") Hardin Walworth was born in Saratoga Springs, New York, on August 17, 1853, the son of Mansfield Tracy Walworth (1830-1873) and Ellen Hardin (1832-1915). He attended Georgetown College and later studied law. The Walworth family lived together for a time in New York City, but Ellen Walworth and her children later returned to Saratoga Springs. According to Frank H. Walworth, his father became abusive; on June 3, 1873, Mansfield and Frank Walworth met at the Sturtevant House Hotel in New York City, where Frank killed his father. Walworth's trial was held from June 24, 1873-July 2, 1873; he was convicted for second-degree murder and received a life sentence at Sing Sing Prison. Governor Lucius Robinson pardoned Walworth on August 1, 1877. Walworth married Corinne Bramlette on December 20, 1883, and they had one daughter, Clara G. Walworth (1886-1952). Frank H. Walworth died on October 29, 1886.
American journalist and politician.
New York State journalist and politician; powerful leader of Whig Party.
Printer, journalist, and politician.
Thurlow Weed was born in Cairo, in upstate New York, in 1797. He attended school only briefly and spent his younger years working at a variety of odd jobs. After serving in the War of 1812, Weed began his newspaper career as a foreman for The Albany Register. He then became involved in state and local politics, initially as a supporter of DeWitt Clinton, and in the election of 1824, worked for the election of John Quincy Adams for President. Weed was very active in Whig politics, being instrumental in the successful New York gubernatorial campaign of William H. Seward in 1838 and in the election of William Henry Harrison to the U.S. Presidency in 1840. Staying mainly behind the scenes, Weed had a reputation as a very capable political manager and manipulator, using patronage, favors, and the power of the press on behalf of the Whigs. Weed supported the presidency of Zachary Taylor, but when Taylor died and Millard Fillmore assumed the presidency, the Compromise of 1850 was passed, allowing some states to self-determine on the issue of slavery. This would mark the end of the Whig Party's importance in the United States.
In 1867, Weed New York City, where he briefly worked as a newspaper editor and remained active and interested in public affairs. He died in November, 1882. Thurlow Weed's grandson, William Barnes Jr., would become a very influential member of the New York State Republican Party in the early 20th Century.

Inventory of the Everette B. Long Papers 1949-1981
Title:
Inventory of the Everette B. Long Papers 1949-1981
Everette Beach Long, one of America's foremost experts on the Civil War, was born on 24 October 1919, in Whitehall, Wisconsin to Cecil Everettee and Florence (Beach) Long. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio from 1937 to 1939 and Northwestern University from 1939 to 1941. In 1942, E. B. Long married Barbara Conzelman. Devoting himself to historical research and teaching, and a prolific writer of historical works focusing on the American Civil War, Long was the director of research for Doubleday's multi-volume , written by Bruce Catton from 1955 to 1965. He was a member of the advisory council of the National Civil War Centennial Commission. Long was a member of the Chicago Civil War Round Table and served as its president from 1955 to 1956. He was a member of the Friends of the Chicago Public Library and was its president in 1960. Long died on 31 March 1981 in Chicago, Illinois, the day after the publication of his last work, . The E. B. Long Papers (1949-1981) consist of thirty-four boxes (40 linear ft), including: personal correspondence, manuscripts by Long and others, articles, booklets, essays, clippings, photocopies, research notes, maps, brochures, and photographs. While most of the materials in this collection are dated in the twentieth century, there are several original Civil War documents of the nineteenth century. Of further interest are the drafts of Allan Nevins's , which were edited by E. B. Long, and the nine long index boxes of Long's research notes on the Civil War. The papers have been divided into the following categories: personal correspondence, manuscripts by Long, manuscripts by others, general files covering a wide range of subjects, drafts of Allan Nevins' , research notes on the Civil War, index card files of articles, and miscellaneous volumes of clippings. The correspondence is arranged both chronologically for general correspondence and alphabetically for correspondence with specific individuals, resulting in some overlapping of dates. Correspondents include Bruce Catton, the Civil War Round Table, Doubleday and Company, Allan Nevins, Lowell Reedinbaugh, and John Y. Simon. Title:
Papers, 1837-1872.
This collection consists primarily of correspondence sent by Horace Greeley. Many of the letters in this collection concern political affairs. Letter to G.W.C. [manuscript], 1862 November 25.
Charles F. B notes that General Banks has declined a dinner invitation and then discusses the current political situation, condeming Seward and Weed as humbugs and knaves who are bumbling foreign diplomacy in regard to Louis Napoleon and selling state secrets to George Peabody and other U.S. merchants living abroad. He regrets that a "man for the hour" has not appeared but thinks Butler the nearest.

Title:
Letter relating to General George C. McClellan's presidential aspirations, 1914.
A proof slip from Harper's Magazine, November 20, 1914, "Was McClellan a Traitor?" The article was an excerpt from the diary of President Lincoln's secretary John Hay in which Hay wrote that the President related to him that Major General W. F. Smith stated that Major General George G. McClellan was a traitor. President Lincoln stated the story had been told to him by Vermont Governor J. Gregory Smith, General Smith's cousin. The folder contains a letter from Walter H. Crockett, November 23, 1914, to Mrs. W. B. Fonda of St. Albans, Vermont, asking about her father's (Governor J. Gregory Smith) part in the episode and did she have anything in writing to substantiate it. Mrs. Fonda replied to Mr. Crockett on December 7, 1914, that she had heard her father tell the story many times when she was a child, but had no written documentation to prove it.
