Mahlon Dickerson (April 17, 1770 - October 5, 1853) was an American judge and politician. He was elected Governor of New Jersey as well as United States Senator from that state. He was twice appointed Secretary of the Navy - under Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin van Buren.
Richard Dale was a naval officer.
Gov. of N.J.; Senator, Sec. of Navy.
U.S. secretary of the Navy, U.S. senator from New Jersey, and governor of New Jersey.
Governor of New Jersey, U.S. senator, and secretary of the navy.
Mahlon Dickerson, the son of Mary Coe (1752-1827) and Jonathan Dickerson (1747-1805), was born on April 17, 1770 in Hanover Neck, New Jersey. Although he was licensed as a lawyer in 1793, the following year he joined the force that journeyed into western Pennsylvania to stamp out the Whisky Rebellion. After this adventure, he returned to New Jersey and then Philadelphia where he practiced law and entered into local politics. He served as a New Jersey State Assemblyman, a New Jersey Supreme Court Justice, the Governor of New Jersey, a United States Senator, the Secretary of the Navy, and a U.S. District Judge for the State of New Jersey. After retiring from political life, Dickerson attended New Jersey's Constitutional Convention in 1844 and from 1846-1847 was President of the American Institute. In the late 1840s he finally retired from public life and spent his final days at Ferromonte. Mahlon Dickerson never married and died at his home on October 5, 1853.
Philemon Dickerson, the youngest son of Mary and Jonathan Dickerson, was born in Succasunna, New Jersey on June 6, 1788. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1808, was admitted to the bar in 1813, and opened a law office in Philadelphia. He relocated to Paterson, New Jersey soon after his marriage to Sydney Maria Stotesbury in 1816 and entered politics where he served as a New Jersey State Assemblyman, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Governor of New Jersey, and as a District Court Judge for New Jersey. Philemon and Sydney Dickerson had four children: John Henry, Mary, Edward Nicoll, and Philemon, Jr. Philemon Dickerson died in Paterson, New Jersey on December 10, 1862.

Letterbooks, 1788-1853 [microform].
The records consist of a microfilm of four volumes of letterbooks containing Cope's outbound correspondence from December 1788 to May 1853. The quantity of letters decreases markedly after 1835, as Cope relinquishes most of the details of business to his sons. Cope kept no diary between 1820 and 1843, and the letters are the primary source on his life and career during this period.

Elisha Kent Kane Papers, Bulk, 1843-1857, 1810-1953
Title:
Elisha Kent Kane Papers Bulk, 1843-1857 1810-1953
The most stellar member of a stellar family, Elisha Kent Kane was among the most popular American explorers of the mid-nineteenth century, a hero in the tragic mode. Born in Philadelphia in 1820, the son of John Kintzing Kane and Jane Duval Leiper, Kane studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania before earning a commission as a naval surgeon. While in the Navy, Kane embarked on the succession of voyages to exotic locales that became the basis for his extraordinary fame. In 1843, he attended Caleb Cushing's first diplomatic mission to China as ship's physician, and subsequently traveled to the Philippines and Western Africa. Distinguishing himself in the Mexican War, Kane's greatest fame came from two expeditions to the arctic, aiming to locate the lost explorer, Sir John Franklin and to explore for evidence of the open polar sea. Kane died in 1857 while attempting to organize a third arctic voyage. Part of the Kane Family Collection, the Papers of Elisha Kent Kane contain a mix of personal and family correspondence with correspondence relating to all of Kane's explorations. Intelligent, articulate and very much a romantic, Kane's letters are expressive and passionate. The collection provides fine documentation of youth, his relationship with the Spiritualist Margaret Fox, and of course his travels to China and off the coast of Africa in 1846. Kane's two expeditions to the arctic are particularly well documented, with correspondence, notes, logbooks, diaries, and sketches, as well as Kane's post-expedition notes, writings, and lectures recounting his experiences.

Hull, Isaac, 1773-1843. Papers, 1810-1842.
Title:
Papers, 1810-1842.
This is the most extensive collection of documents relative to the career of Isaac Hull and his many years service in the U.S. Navy. The papers span the years 1810 to 1842 and include letters and letter-books, ledgers and account books, log books and ships papers, legal records and official reports, meteorological observations and sundry printed matter. Some of the more interesting documents were published in Commodore Hull: Papers of Isaac Hull (Boston, 1929). The bulk of the collection falls around 1840, during his period of service in the Mediterranean, when he had command of "Ohio," "Cyane," "Brandywine" and "Preble." Of great importance are the many letters from officials in Washington and U.S. consuls overseas, including William Tudor, Obadiah Rich and Hosea Sprague, which give a good account of political and military conditions at home and abroad. The papers, in sum, present a vivid picture of the development of the U.S. Navy during a critical period, beset by frequently hostile European forces and by suspicious bureaucrats in Washington, yet strengthened by the character, resolve and the organizational abilities of clear-minded sailors such as Commodore Hull. Also included in the collection are William Miller's account of the battle of Ayacucho (1825) and Bernardo O'Higgins' "To the virtuous inhabitants of the Archipelago of Chiloe" (1826).
