Mahlon F. Dickerson went into partnership with his paternal uncle and namesake Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853), opening a general store called M.F. Dickerson & Co. in Succasunna, Morris County, New Jersey. The store had a close relationship with the nearby Dickerson Iron Mine, run by Mahlon Dickerson, yet seems to have done poorly. The Dickersons dissolved their partnership in 1817, with the younger Dickerson retaining the company.
