Samuel L. Southard (1787-1842) was a prominent U.S. statesman of the early 19th century. He served as a New Jersey Senator from 1821 to 1823, during which time he was a member of the committee that produced the Missouri Compromise. In 1823 President James Monroe selected him to be Secretary of the Navy, and he remained in office under President John Quincy Adams. Under Southard's leadership, the Navy grew by approximately 50% in personnel and expenditures. He became the New Jersey Attorney General in 1829, and briefly served as Governor from 1832 to 1833. Southard became the leader of the Whig Party and became acting Vice President from April 4, 1841 to May 31, 1842 after the death of William Henry Harrison.
