Sophie Madeleine Du Pont was the youngest daughter of Eleuthère Irénée and Sophie Dalmas du Pont. E. I. du Pont was the founder of the black powder manufacturing company, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Sophie was raised at Eleutherian Mills, the house that her father built on the bluff overlooking his black powder manufactory. Sophie and her siblings learned English but French was the language of the du Pont home. Eleuthère Irénée emigrated to the United States from France in 1802). In June of 1833 Sophie Du Pont married her cousin Midshipman Samuel Francis Du Pont. They established a household at Louviers across the Brandywine River from Eleutherian Mills. During the next thirty-two years Samuel Francis Du Pont was at sea much of the time and Sophie remained at home. She was involved in religious activities (at Christ Church), reading, teaching (at Sunday School) and missionary efforts. Her husband died in 1865 and Sophie spent much of her remaining life collecting his papers and attempting to rehabilitate his reputation which had suffered after he was blamed for the failure of the Union Navy's attack on Charleston.
Daughter of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont and wife of Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont.

Title:
Papers, 1798-1861.
The papers cover a period of sixty years. As a woman of means, she was able to pursue her interests, which included education and literature. Outgoing letters (1803-1861) were written to her mother, siblings, nieces and nephews, and friends. The letters primarily discuss family matters, health, sewing, clothing, weather, and household administration, particulary the management of servants. The incoming letters (1798-1861) were written by family and friends. Letters from school friends document their interest in fashion, visits, courting, and literature. Of particular note are the exchanges with Antoinette Brevost, a member of a French refugee family who established a girl's school in Pittsburgh before going on to teach at Natchez.

Title:
Papers, 1812-1865.
The Samuel Francis Du Pont Papers include correspondence with more than 1,500 individuals. There is a good deal of official and semi-official correspondence describing naval practices and policies as well as Du Pont's career. Of particular interest are letters from British diplomats and naval officers during the 1840s and 50s describing the operations of the British Navy. Letters received from William B. Reed, American minister to China, document the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Tientsin which opened up China to western trade. Letters from American missionaries Samuel Wells and William and Edward Syle describe the missionary movement in China and efforts to eradicate the opium trade. The files also contain correspondence reflecting Du Pont's role in the Naval Efficiency Board and the reform movement which sought to modernize the navy as it moved into the age of steam.

Title:
Notre transplantation en Amerique, dédiée à nos enfants et à nos neveux.
The memoir, in 91 pp. including notes, forms what amounts to the second volume of Josephine du Pont's autobiography. It was begun in Philadelphia in 1826 and completed in 1833. It's chief value lies in the picture it gives of a French woman and her family trying to adjust to a new society and a strage country. The memoir describes her husband's career in some detail from the time he came to the U.S. with Adet in 1795 until his death in 1827. It describes his many business misfortunes, particularly his bankruptcy in New York as a result of the failure of the French government to reimburse him for provisioning French forces in Santo Domingo. There are also useful references to E.I. du Pont and the development of the Delaware powder mills. References to Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours include an explanation for his failure to receive a peerage at the Restauration. Josephine and Victor's life in the frontier settlement of Angelica is described in great detail.

Papers, 1807-1892.
While most of his correspondence is personal, there are observations on political and military matters in letters to his brother, Samuel Francis Du Pont. Business records of Charles I. du Pont & Co. include accounts and notes and a list of employees subscribing to a fund for an injured co-worker. Other representative elements include correspondence with James J. Barclay, of Philadelphia, a friend of many years, and with Louis Paul D'Autremont, the Comte de Menou, and Edward Livingston concerning claims of the Comte de Coëtlogon and the heirs of John Law (1671-1729) to lands included in the Louisiana Purchase. Charles I. du Pont appears to have succeeded his father as agent for the French claimants in the United States, when they petitioned Congress on the subject. Livingston was a member of Congress at the time from Louisiana. Law's financial operations, which ended in the "Mississippi Bubble", included the acquisition of a vast estate in what is now Arkansas.

Francis Victor du Pont family papers, 1804-1961 [bulk, 1915-1960].
This collection combines papers and memorabilia of Francis Victor du Pont and those of his parents and ancestors. Francis Victor du Pont's own papers focus primarily on his role as an engineer promoting better highways, his roles in Delaware Republican Party affairs including his term as finance chairman. In the former category are papers relating to Coleman du Pont Road, Inc., which his father created to improve the present U.S. Route 13 as a gift to the state the State Highway department, the Bureau of Public Roads, the American Road Builders' Association, and two items on the building and dedication of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The second are focused on the period 1949-60, particularly the first Eisenhower-Nixon presidential campaign, with items on the reactions to Nixon's famous "Checkers" speech. Personal papers contain information on personal investments, family relationships, diplomas, clippings and biographical notes. Papers of T. Coleman du Pont deal primarily with two events, Coleman's sale of his DuPont Company stock to Pierre S. du Pont through the medium of the Du Pont Securities Company and the extensive litigation brought by other family stockholders to block the sale and divide Coleman's interest proportionately, and his building of the Coleman du Pont Boulevard, later Coleman du Pont Highway. Among the latter is a large presentation book from the people of Delaware containing signatures and speeches commemorating the gift of the highway to the state in 1924. Family miscellany consists of random pieces from other extended du Pont family members dating back to 1804, including letters of Nicholas Van Dyke, Samuel Francis Du Pont, family reminiscences relating to Admiral and Mrs. Samuel Francis Du Pont, Mary Van Dyke du Pont, and others, including a copy of the New York American of October 12, 1824 concerning the visit of Lafayette to Victor du Pont.

Sophie Du Pont's voluminous correspondence contains more than 20,000 letters to family and friends. More than 1,000 of these are to her husband, Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, and they were written while he was on extended sea duty in the Far East, Mediterranean, or on the Atlantic blockade. The letters describe Sophie Du Pont's domestic life at Louviers and contain observations about the social, cultural, and political events of the period in which she lived. These letters show that Sophie Du Pont had a certain ambivalence about the role of women in society as she consciously struggled to balance her intellectual interest which her domestic obligations particularly during her husband's long absences.

Acquisitions of Pierre S. du Pont, 1438-1921.
The papers in this collection were acquired by Pierre S. du Pont by purchase or through gift. For some years before his death he was an active collector of Du Pont materials and bought several important bodies of manuscripts from French dealers. These papers are primarily concerned with Du Pont de Nemours, the Physiocrats, the French Revolution, and the antecedents of the Du Ponts and allied families in France. Of particular interest are letters from Jean Baptiste Colbert (1652), Gaspard de Coligny (1554), Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1795), and Comte Roger de Bussy-Rabutin (1675). Papers of Gabriel Denizot (1818) describe the establishment of the Du Pont Powder Company at Eleutherian Mills. Also included are miscellaneous papers of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. Papers of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) contain notebooks on explosions at the gunpowder mills (1815-1902). Papers of Du Pont de Nemours include a copy of his essay on education in the United States entitled "Sur l'éducation nationale dans les Etats-Unis d'Amérique" n.d. This essay was written at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson during the summer of 1800. It was sent to Jefferson for correction and translation, but this process was never completed.
