Hancock, Harold Bell, 1913-1987
Variant namesHenry du Pont was born on August 8, 1812, the second son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, the founder of the family explosives business. He was educated at Mt. Airy College in Germantown, Pa., and at West Point. In 1834 he resigned his army commission and returned to Delaware to join the family firm. He became a junior partner in 1837. He replaced his older brother Alfred Victor du Pont as senior partner in 1850, a position he retained until his death on August 8, 1889.
