Papers, 1861-1887, bulk 1880-1881.

The bulk of this series contains letters written by Cazenove Gardner Lee and Marguerite du Pont to each other while they were courting in 1880 and 1881. Many of the letters were written while Marguerite was in Europe on her grand tour. Additional letters were written after the couple's marriage during their brief periods of separation. Other material in this series features correspondence sent to and from Cazenove or Marguerite and other family members. The focus of these letters is on family matters.

Sophie Madeleine Du Pont was the youngest daughter of Eleuthère Irénée and Sophie Dalmas du Pont. E. I. du Pont was the founder of the black powder manufacturing company, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Cazenove Gardner Lee was born in 1850 to Cassius F. and Anne Eliza Gardner Lee. He attended the University of Virginia and became a lawyer. In 1881, he married Marguerite Lammot du Pont, a cousin. She was born in 1862, the daughter of Eleuthere Irenee du Pont and Charlotte Henderson. (Charlotte was one of Anthony Charles Cazenove's granddaughters).
