Dorcas Montgomery Van Dyke was the daughter of Nicholas Van Dyke (1769-1826) and Mary Van Lekvenigh Van Dyke (1768-1831) of New Castle, Del. The Van Dyke male family members were active in government, with Nicholas Van Dyke serving in both the state and federal government. He was a member of the U.S. Senate from 1817-1826.
